Oweniwe Chukwudi, a 22-year-old National Diploma, ND, student of the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, was said to have lured his girlfriend, Adeyeye Nifemi, to follow him to a bush about 10 kilometers away from campus. There, he attacked her and left her for dead only to return the next day to carry out his ritual intentions but was surprised to find out she was still alive.
Pretending to help her, the suspect, according to reports, took Nifemi to a camp close to a filling station in Ilu Abo, where he strangled her again. When she didn’t die, he reportedly smashed her head with stones until she died.
The suspect, Oweniwe Chukwudi, was later arrested by the Ondo state Police following a tip-off and during interrogation, he confessed to committing the crime. The news prompted speculations that the ND student was a secret cult member who had attempted to use his girlfriend for money rituals. However, he denied the allegations saying that he killed his girlfriend simply for the fun of it.
“I did not remove any part of her body; I only killed her for the fun of it. I made love with her in the bush before killing her. I am not a cultist. It was when I killed her that I realised I made a big mistake and I wept bitterly.”
Speaking after his arrest by police detectives in Ondo State, Oweniwe, whose parents are cassava farmers in Ogbese area of the state, said he was pushed by the devil. Chukwudi and the girlfriend, Adeyeye Nifemi, were both 300 level students of the Science Laboratory Technology, SLT, department.
