Plateau United midfielder, Simon Shehu Sabole, has died after he was involved in a ghastly car crash on Sunday. Spokesman of the club, Albert Dakup, confirmed the sad news, explaining that the accident occurred when Sabole was making a trip from the central Nigerian city of Jos to his hometown in Kaduna.
“It is a very sad news to us at Plateau United because Shehu was one of our best players and played a very vital role in helping us gain promotion to the top division last season
“He was travelling to Kaduna so as to make arrangements for his wedding coming up next weekend. And then we got this sad news. This is really sad.”
The club’s general manager, Pius Senwan,who also confirmed the news, revealed that Shehu was traveling to prepare for his upcoming wedding, when the unfortunate incident occurred.
The death of Sabole came in just after their 0-0 draw with four-time Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, Kano Pillars. Sabole had previously played for El-Kanemi Warriors and Niger Tornadoes.
Meanwhile, Enyimba beat Nasarawa United 1-0 in a tightly-fought game played on Saturday. Their win came at a price though, as Mfon Udon
Enyimba however overcame some nervy moments in the closing stages to close out the win over United at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
Udon’s injury is should however be a concern to Enyimba as the striker is the top scorer in this season’s CAF Champions League with the draw for the group stages of the competition due to hold on May 24.
The Peoples Elephant have now moved up to eighth place on the NPFL standings with 27 points from 14 matches.
