Arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrate Court on a three-count charge of domestic violence, assault, and a threat to life, Lanre pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Police prosecutor, Inspector N. Peter told the court that Gentry on April 17, conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by constituting a nuisance and behaving in a disorderly manner in a public place. According to Peter, Gentry unlawfully assaulted his wife by beating her with physical blows all over her body and also caused Mercy Aigbe grievous bodily harm after giving her a blow on the nose, with blood gushing out.
Lanre Gentry’s offense is contrary to and punishable under sections 157 (f), 168 (a) and 171 of the Criminal Law No II, Vol. 44 Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011, according to the prosecuting counsel.
Gentry was granted bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in the like sum. The sureties must show proof of tax payment and own houses in Lagos with title documents. He was also ordered to remain in prison until he meets the bail demands. The case was adjourned until May 12 for trial.
Industry reports reveal that Gentry was initially asked to appear in court on Monday following a physical assault charge levelled against him by the Lagos State Department of Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team. He, however, failed to show up in court claiming that he was admitted in a Lagos hospital for an undisclosed ailment.
Consequently, his estranged wife took to her Instagram account on Monday morning, calling out her husband, alleging that he was trying to evade arrest with the help of the police.
Mercy and Lanre’s seven-year union which has produced a son is Mercy’s second marriage, while it is her husband’s third marriage. Last week, the couple broke the internet after photos of Mercy Aigbe’s battered face went viral indicating that their marriage was about to hit the rock, and many hoped it was just a publicity stunt.
But a few days later, the actress confirmed that she was domestically violated by her husband via one of her social media pages.
However, Lanre Gentry insisted that he had never beaten his wife, claiming that the actress has a mental illness which he said is affecting her. According to him, Mercy had been battling the illness for a while but that he had always been there for her all through the years they had been together.
But Mercy’s close friend, Lara Olubo also claimed to have witnessed Lanre Gentry abusing his wife. Sharing a photo of Mercy’s battered face, Olubo said she had witnessed Lanre beat his wife and almost beat her too when she tried to wade in.
