DPO Manhandles Female Traffic Warden In Ogun State

Mr. Patrick Onwu, who is the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Ikenne Division of Ogun State, lost control of his reasoning yesterday as he beat a female traffic officer for stopping his private car.

According to the story, the very hot-blooded DPO, who was not wearing his uniform while he was said to have disobeyed the traffic law, drove into a nearby filling station, parked and changed into a police uniform only to return and descend on the helpless traffic warden, Inspector Anifat Bello,  who was at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), junction, on IBB Boulevard way, discharging her official duty.

Inspector Anifat Bello, was reported to have been beaten to a state of near-unconsciousness by the senior officer who was entering Abeokuta from Sagamu axis of the Siun-Kopabe-Sagamu Expressway.

Not minding the fact that he allegedly disobeyed traffic laws, the DPO, Patrick Onwu was said to have manhandled the traffic warden for having the effrontery to stop his private car.

It will be recalled that the traffic warden, Anifat Bello, who have on different occasions been honoured for her dedication to duty, was once recommended for a national honour by former President Olusegun Obasanjo during a familarisation visit of the state Police Commissioner, Abdulmajid Ali.

When the Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi was contacted over the incident, he confirmed the incident and disclosed that the Commissioner of Police (CP),  was not happy about the occurrence and had issued a directive for a thorough investigation into the matter.

He said:

“The woman traffic officer has reported the matter to the CP and he has directed that the matter be thoroughly investigated. The CP was not happy when the woman came with a swollen face. If the allegation is true, I am very sure the CP will know what to do.”

How can Nigeria ever get better with people like Mr. Patrick Onwu in the Police Force? People who believe that being in a position of authority places them above the law. Judging from the story, the DPO probably became furious because the woman failed to shudder at the sight of him like most people may have been doing, and then pass him even though it may be wrong at the time.

It’s good to know there are still people who do not look at faces while discharging their duties. I just hope she gets justice.
