Nigeria’s former Senate President, David Mark has raised an alarm over a supposed secret plan by Benue State deputy governor, Benson Abounu and some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to assassinate him prior to the up-coming re-run election in Benue South Senatorial District.
Mark, who is contesting the February 20 poll on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, stating that he uncovered the plan through intelligence gathering.
He particularly alleged that Daniel Onjeh, APC candidate for the election, through his campaign Director, Okpokwu Ogenyi, in alliance with the deputy governor employed the services of cult boys to cause terror in Benue South and in the process single him (Mark) out for elimination.
According to David Mark,
“Credible sources listed the cultists hired for the assassination to include the notorious supreme Vikings Squad from Jos, Plateau State and the dreaded Black Axe in Makurdi Benue State.”
David Mark made this startling revelation in a statement issued on Monday by his media aid, Paul Mumeh reports Premium Times.
Furthermore, the statement reports that In his petition to the IGP, which is signed by his counsel, Ken Ikonne, the ex-senate president claimed that Mr. Ogenyi was the major figure in the plot to end his life.
“It is obvious that Ogenyi knows more about the assassination plot than he has revealed.
“Our client has therefore instructed us to petition you( IGP) to as a matter of urgency apprehend and interrogate Ogenyi to throw more light on the details of this grave assassination plot before he and his associates carry out the dastardly plot,” the petition said.
“Only yesterday,(Sunday), police said to be attached to the State Deputy Governor Benson Abounu fired several gun shots into the family house of Senator Mark in Otukpo.
“No reason was given for the unprovoked attack and no arrest has been made.”
It was also pointed out in the petition that only a couple of weeks ago, the chairman of the APC in Benue state, Abbah Yaro, was quoted as saying,
“…if Senator Mark wants, let him win the election in seven out of the nine local government areas but no returning officer born of a woman will dare declare him.”
In addition, it was written in the statement that Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, the PDP Chairman in the state, had sent a petition to Benue State command of the Nigerian Police Force concerning the unhealthy political activities of the APC in the state ahead of the election and urged the authorities to prevail on the party members in order to allow peace to reign.
Bisi Kolawole, the Police Force Public Relations Officer and an assistant commissioner, could not be reached for comments.
Reacting to David Mark’s allegations, his opponent Daniel Onjeh, has denied the claims stating that his political ambition is not worth the blood of any human being and that neither him nor any member of his team is nursing the idea of assassinating him.
In a counter statement issued by Ogenyi on behalf of the campaign organization, Mark’s story was described as baseless and unfounded.
