Several arrests have been made following the saga of diversion of $2.1 billion meant for arms purchase by officials of the immediate past administration. On Wednesday night, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commissions (EFCC) raided the house of the former military governor of Kaduna State and chieftain of the nations’ ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), Lawal Jafaru Isa, who was believed to have collected N170millon from the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Mr. Dasuki.
However, sources close to EFCC said that Mr. Isa, who is a close associate of the president, Muhammadu Buhari was released several hours later after refunding N100 million to the anti-graft commission and promised to return the remaining N70 million soon.
Following the release of Mr. Isa barely eight hours after his arrest,The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) ha lashed out at the APC, protesting the release of Mr. Isa. In a statement that was released on Sunday 10th January 2016, The opposition party accused the APC of being out to maltreat and witch-hunt its party members. The statement realesed by PDP and signed by its legal adviser, Victor Kwon, read:.
“The release of Jafaru Isa, a known associate of the President and chieftain of the APC eight hours after his arrest while our spokesman remains in detention even when the two are being investigated over the same allegation clearly shows that the President Buhari-led APC government is not fighting corruption but using the much hyped crusade as a cover to persecute PDP leaders and decimate the opposition, a project the EFCC has clearly yielded itself as a willing tool.”
At the time of the report, the APC is yet to reply.
