Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo Bags Another Award, Makes History

The year 2016 has no doubt been an awesome year for Real Madrid striker, Cristiano Ronaldo.

This year alone, Ronaldo has won several major championships and individual awards including the Champions League, the European Championship, the Club World Cup and his fourth Ballon d’Or title.

Crowning off the year for the Portuguese striker is his latest award, the European Sportsman of the Year.

Cristiano Ronaldo now becomes the first ever footballer to win the title.

Also contending for the award were the likes of German F1 driver Nico Rosberg, British tennis player Andy Murray, and Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszu.

The European Sportsman award is chosen by 27 leading European media outlets. and has a voting points system similar to that of the Ballon d’Or.

The judges use a voting points system similar to that of the Ballon d’Or.

In all, the 31-year-old scored the highest with 204 points.

Cristiano Ronaldo Bags Another Award

That put him 24 points ahead of his nearest challenger, Murray (180). while Hosszu (136) and Rosberg (115) were further behind.

Hosszu and (115) fell further behind Ronaldo and Murray with 136 and 115 points respectively.


Going by his most recent stats, Ronaldo looks set for an even greater year in 2017.

The former Manchester United forward already has netted 10 goals in 11 La Liga matches this season.

Positioning coach Zinedine Zidane’s side pretty on top of the league table by three points with an outstanding game pending.

Madrid are also through to the final-16 in the Champions League where they are billed to take on Napoli.

Ronaldo Bags Another Award: European Sportsman Of The Year

Ronaldo after winning the Ballon d’Or at the Bernabéu last month said he was proud to get his hands on the prestigious award for he fourth time.

He said:

“A great honour to receive my fourth golden ball.

“The emotion is like the first one. It’s the dream come true again.

“I never thought in my mind to win the golden ball four times so I’m so pleased and happy.

“I have the opportunity to thank all my team-mates, the national team, Real Madrid, all the people and players who helped me to win this individual award.

“So as you can imagine, I feel so proud and happy to receive this amazing and beautiful ball.”
