As hard as she tried, Celine Dion could not just hold back the tears as she broke down during the memorial service held in honour of her late husband and manager Rene Angelil at the Colosseum (Caesar’s Palace) in Las Vegas on Wednesday night, 3rd February.
Many friends, family and fans converged at the Colosseum, Celine’s place of residency, to be with her for the emotional service, which was streamed live across the world.
The singer of “My Heart Will Go On,” who was dressed in a graceful, shoulder-revealing black gown, took to the stage to address the assembly.
Dion told the audience:
Let me start by saying good evening, good friends. René, the love of my life, would be so happy to know we are here together. I feel the love in this room.
This is my home away from home. At the same time, I’m supposed to feel extremely comfortable being home, and right now, I’m not sure how comfortable I feel.
Becoming very emotional as she recalled her husband of more than 20 years, she continued:
René never hated anyone. Is it possible someone loves everybody? I don’t think so. But he never told me a person he disliked… Time was precious to him. He loved life so much, so very much.
The 47-year-old tragically lost her husband to throat cancer on January 14th, two days before his 74th birthday, after battling cancer for a long time and also her brother, Daniel, just within two days of each other.
After narrating stories of happy times together, the heroic 47-year-old singer became overcome with emotion as she brought her speech to a close.
On behalf of my family, thank you again for being here for this beautiful tribute of mon amour, René, I love you, so much. Merci. Good night.
A little while before the memorial service, Celine shared a beautiful picture where she embraces her late husband backstage at one of her concerts in the shot posted on her official Facebook page. After that her team wrote: “Today, a ‘celebration of life’ of René Angélil will be held at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace from 19 pm (PST) and this will be distributed simultaneously online”.
Celine and Rene were married since 1994. The pair renewed their vows in 2000 and had three children together. Their love was such that the modern-day celebrities should emulate. Celine Dion, who nursed her husband throughout his sick period, said that her husband’s last wish was to die in her arms. According to Celine, who was also preparing herself for her husband’s absence before his demise, ‘…my biggest job is to tell my husband, “We’re fine. I’ll take care of our kids. You’ll watch us from another spot“.
No matter how prepared you think you are for the death of a loved one, it is only when the reality hits you that you’ll realize you were never ready.
