Former Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Tele Ikuru who served under former Governor Rotimi Amaechi for 8 years has said his former boss is only barking and making empty threats when speaking about the security situation in the state.
Mr. Ikuru who was addressing PDP supporters at the grand finale of the Rivers South-East campaign of the party said the alleged plan by the All Progressives Congress (APC), to rig Saturday’s legislative election will not be possible and called on the people to resist any form of intimidation from the security operatives. He said:
“It is an empty threat. He is powerless. He (Amaechi) is only barking. I know him very well. When he was governor, he bragged that he has the Police in his right pocket, that he has the army in his left pocket, that he has the Airforce and the Navy in his back pockets and he still lost the last election woefully. Let him come with his Army, the police and all the security he has, they cannot do anything. Is it now that we have thrown him out as Governor he wants to win election?”
Mr. Amaechi’s had on Saturday during an APC rally in Rumueme, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, told APC supporters that they hope to win the elections credibly and not write results like Nyesom Wike did.
According to Amaechi:
“Saturday is your day, come out and vote. They will no longer have the police they had, they will no longer have the army they had, we pray that INEC should be neutral, your job is to match out and vote for APC, we will not write results like Nyesom Wike, so go back to your wards and do door to door.”
The Rivers State government had earlier condemned what it termed as “shameless and irresponsible” remarks made by the Minister of Transportation, in a television programme aired on African Independent Television (AIT) in Abuja, and also on Rhythm FM in Port Harcourt.
In the interview, Amaechi accused the state government and the Rivers State Police Command of abetting and supporting criminals, and blamed them for the recent killings in some areas in Rivers State.
The state government said he (Amaechi) is only interested in instigating anarchy in the state in an attempt to help the APC rig March 19 legislative polls in the state and called on the people of Rivers State to be vigilant and to stoutly resist any attempt by Amaechi and the APC to rig the elections come next Saturday.
