Yours Maybe Among 150 Unaccredited Courses In Nigeria’s Universities


An authentic report today, Wednesday, August 10, has listed at least 150 undergraduate academic programmes in Nigeria’s Universities; public and private – as unaccredited.

The report was obtained from the National Universities Commission (NUC), which revealed the unaccredited courses domiciled in 37 of 143 universities in the country.

Criteria issued for by the Quality Assurance Department of the NUC that are in charge of accrediting courses in Nigeria’s universities, says for a course to be accredited, it must meet the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) that has been drawn up by the commission.

Students studying such courses at any of these Nigeria’s universities which includes; UNN, UNIZIK, UNIBEN, UNICAL, UNIJOS etc., run the risk of money and time wasted ventures, as mandate by NUC says,

  • Accreditation of courses is necessary to assure employers and other members of the community that Nigerian graduates of all academic programmes have attained an acceptable level of competency in their areas of specialization.
  • And certify courses to assure the international community that the programmes offered in Nigerian Universities are of high standards and that graduates of the institutions are adequate for employment and further studies.

For a university course in Nigeria to be accredited, it must conform to the following requirements: qualified faculty members, good learning environment and adequate teaching materials – equipment, books and journals.

The commission also mandated that Courses with full accredition must be subjected for re-accredition every five years during which some courses might lose or retain their certification. While some fully accredited courses could face interim accreditation if their facilities and faculty are found to have depreciated.
