Formerly known for his club banger, ‘Duro,’ Tekno whose latest song ‘Pana’ is currently ruling the airwaves has been disqualified from the Headies Next Rated award category.
The Ebonyi-state born singer was nominated in the category alongside Ycee, Mr. Eazi, Humblesmith and
Aramide, who most critics say fit more into the category than Tekno, who is regarded as an older artiste in the industry.
The organizers had earlier on clarified that Next Rated is not just for new artistes but for any artiste who is yet to release an album. Tekno falls in that category.
However, they didn’t hesitate to take him off the list because he refused to honour the category and support the campaign.
As custom with the Headies Awards, the nominees are expected to attend promo activities for the event, and also take part in the promotion for the category sponsor, Hyundai. Tekno failed to submit himself for engagements, promo campaign photos and more.
Tekno had earlier rubbished the Headies Awards when he was announced in the category. He took to Instagram to say “Next rated after how many years! Let’s be honest pls”.
Similar to Tekno’s case, Chuddy K was taken off the nominee list due in 2012 after the organizers received an information that he released an album in 2010. Chuddy K was then replaced with Flowssick.
In 2013, Burna Boy came close to being disqualified for not submitting himself to promo campaign activities.
The Headies Awards hold tomorrow 22nd December and will be hosted by Nollywood actress, Adesua Etomi and Falz the Bahd Guy. Fingers crossed, let’s wait and see who goes home with what award.
