It was doomsday in Lagos yesterday as no less than 6 persons were killed including 3 policemen and a little girl during a robbery attack as a gang of robber stormed the First City Monument Bank on Admiralty Way in Lekki, Lagos State.
According to eyewitnesses, the gang of robbers were dressed in military uniforms stormed the bank in a robbery operation that lasted for not less than 40 minutes.
The robbers, who were heavily armed with AK-47 assault rifles, engaged the policemen who were in their van in a shooting competition, ultimately overpowering them and killing the three policemen before shooting sporadically into the air and in the process killing three others and injuring many others.
Among the dead was an innocent 15-year old little girl who was hawking fish for her mother.
The event which occurred about 5 o’clock in the evening sent shock waves around the Lagos – Ikoyi environment as there was traffic jam in the area.
The policemen, as it was claimed by another witness, were accompanying an oil service firm staff bus when they met their doom.
He said, “The policemen were in a patrol van escorting a bus belonging to an oil company when the armed robbers sighted and shot them dead.”
“They were shooting non-stop for about 30 minutes, I saw a policeman and two other persons on the floor with blood gushing out of them. Some policemen tried to engage them, but the robbers were very brutal. They eventually robbed the bank.”
It was not reported that any member of the gang was shot or captured. Another eyewitness said he saw the members of the gang wearing life jackets.They escaped with an unspecified amount of money.
He said, “It was like we were in battlefield. I was shaking where I hid. They escaped in a speed boat .”
Meanwhile in banking hall, they were said to have asked everyone to lie face down while robbed the bank’s vault. A female staff was reported to have been hit with a gun in the process.
After the operation, they continued shooting until they made their way back to a waiting speedboat with which they escaped, catering away boxes of money.
On the other hand, the Lagos State Police spokesperson, Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the death of the three policemen who he said were shot dead while trying to contain the robbers.
“Three policemen who stood gallantly defending the facility were killed in the process. Investigation has already commenced and we have launched a serious manhunt on the robbers. We will ensure that we trace their hideout and track them down.”
