Shagari Receives Congratulatory Message From Jonathan As He Turns 91


Alhaji Shehu Shagari, former President of the Federal Rebulic of Nigeria is 91 years today February 25, and another former president of the country, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has sent him a powerful message to begin the day with.

The message which was issued by the former president’s media adviser, Ikechukwu Eze read:

“I wish to, most compassionately, congratulate you on your 91st birthday.

“I am glad the Almighty Allah has blessed you with long life and good health, in line with your selfless dedication to noble causes and human progress. You have been of immense blessing to Nigeria while serving her in various capacities as a teacher, nationalist, politician and statesman.

“The nation will continue to be grateful to you because of your vision, wisdom, democratic ideals and outstanding achievements as President.

“Your altruism, patriotism and long-standing commitment to peace and development will continue to inspire many Nigerians to offer their best to their country”.

Shehu Usman Shagari was born in Shagari village to the family of Magaji Aliyu and Mariamu on February 25,1925 and  was educated at Kaduna College after which he taught as a teacher for a while.

He was one of the few northerners to show an interest in national politics. In 1954, he ran for a political office  and was elected to the Federal House of Representatives. Thereafter he held several other posts and was a member of every administration after Nigeria’s Independence in 1960. AAfter a military coup in 1966 ended civilian government, he retired to his hometown.

Shagari became  the president of Nigeria in the second republic between 1979 to 1983, before his government was toppled by a coup which brought General Muhammadu Buhari as the Military Head of State.

Shagari was arrested but released from detention in 1986 and banned from  participating  in Nigerian politics for life after being  cleared of personal corruption charges.
