The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, has issued a directive for the immediate demotion in rank and transfer of Mr. Patrick Onwu, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), in charge of Ikenne Division of Ogun State police command, who manhandled a female traffic warden at her duty post.
The IGP also ordered the immediate transfer of the accused officer from Ogun state police command and issued a mandate for the State Police Commissioner to set up a panel that will carry out an investigation into the matter and submit the report of its findings to the force headquarters. He additionally directed the Commissioner to send all necessary information concerning the accused DPO to the office of the Force secretary, Abuja for further disciplinary actions.
Mr. Patrick Onwu, who has now been punished by being demoted from the rank of Superintendent of Police(SP) to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was reported to have beaten up Inspector Anifat Bello, a female traffic warden, while she discharged her duty at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), junction, on IBB Boulevard way, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
Following findings by Daily Sun, the IGP, got to know about the happening on the pages of newspapers, and was reported to have immediately called the State Police Commissioner, giving him the order. Top police sources also made it known in Abuja, that the force headquarters was keeping track of the IGP’s directives to see to it that it is strictly adhered to.
Sources in the Police also disclosed that the Inspector General of Police, officially applauded the high level of discipline exhibited by the female traffic warden who according to him, did not fight back, adding that the likes of Patrick Onwu, should not be in the police.
It would be remembered that Mr. Patrick Onwu, who is the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Ikenne Division of Ogun State, lost control of his reasoning on Monday as he pounced on a female traffic officer for stopping his private vehicle.
The very hot-blooded DPO, who was not wearing his uniform while he was said to have disobeyed traffic law, drove into a nearby filling station, parked and changed into a police uniform only to return and descend on the helpless traffic warden, Inspector Anifat Bello, who was at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), junction, on IBB Boulevard way, discharging her official duty.
