A 37-year-old man, Chukwuma Udenwa, has been arrested for dumping his late father’s corpse in a septic tank at Okpanam community in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The suspect, who hails from Uli in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, was apprehended by policemen from the Okpanam division.
It was gathered that Udenwa had informed his neighbours that one of his sisters, who resides at Ibusa, recently brought his 83-year-old sick father, Mr. John Udenwa to Asaba for medical attention.
And had also told some of them who were aware of his father’s death that he had taken the corpse to the Maduemeze Hospital mortuary only for the corpse to be discovered in the neighbourhood.
The father of three was said to have confessed to the crime upon police interrogation. He allegedly told police investigators that he took the action because he had no money to pay for mortuary bills.
According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Celestina Kalu, who confirmed the incidence said Udenwa was arrested after his landlord discovered a decomposing corpse in one of the septic tanks in the compound.
She disclosed that the decomposing corpse had since been evacuated from the septic tank where the suspected allegedly dumped it, adding that the suspect would be arraigned in court.
Meanwhile, a military source has confirmed that the five Malian soldiers who went missing after a terrorist attack in Mali’s central region of Mopti over the weekend were found dead in River Niger.
According to the source, four bodies were found on Tuesday evening while one other body was found on Wednesday morning.
