Bauchi State Governor, Barr. Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, who has been making strident efforts to eradicate polio and other diseases since his tenure began, has received a personally signed commendation letter from the world’s richest man, Bill Gates.
Abdullahi Abubakar who gave the Ministry of Health the second largest share of the Bauchi State 2016 budget has always reiterated his commitment to the health sector and this has now earned him this commendation.
In the letter, Bill Gates commended Barr. Abubakar for his commitment to strengthening health funding and for ensuring that the 2016 state contribution for the agency’s collaboration around routine immunization.
Gates stated that he was impressed by Bauchi State’s progress to improve the basic fundamentals of its routine immunization system, especially for ensuring full implementation of Primary Health Care Under One Roof, with adequate strengthening of the zonal/area offices.

The National Assembly, Senators and Members of the House of Representatives first to the fourth republics Joint Forum are also set to confer an award of excellence on Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar of Bauchi state for his “exemplary style of promoting probity, transparency and good governance.”
The forum said it deemed it fit to confer the award on Gov. Abubakar for his giant strides made in the area of prioritizing education above all critical sectors, promoting accessibility to good and quality healthcare through good funding, resuscitating decayed industries, anti-corruption in public service, and infrastructural development.
Earlier this year in January, Bill Gates and Alhaji Aliko Dangote signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with seven Northern governors to eradicate polio and other diseases.
The governors of Kaduna, Sokoto, Yobe and Borno entered into the agreement for the first time, while Kano and Bauchi governors had partnered with Gates and Dangote under the auspices of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Dangote Foundation.
Also, in August last year, Bill Gates, Co-Chair, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in a Video Conferencing from Seacche, USA, had also commended the state government for its efforts to curb the polio scourge.
Gates particularly commended the state for maintaining zero polio status since 2013 and promised to continue supporting Nigeria until it atttained polio-free status.
The world’s richest man advised the state government to ensure 99 per cent supply of polio vaccines in all the wards, set up quick response teams, re-strategize to enhance coverage and upgrade it supervision system.
This commendation came after the Bauchi state government released N80 million out of the N160 million counterpart fund contribution of the state for routine immunization.
The money was released after the government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Bill & Melinda Foundation and Dangote Foundation “towards strengthening immunization coverage in the state.”
