“I Met $3.7 Billion In Reserve, While Buhari Met $30 Billion” – Obasanjo Reveals

Speaking sometime in March, 2016, during an interview conducted by Frisk Larr and published on his blog, former President Olusegun Obasanjo revealed the amount of money which Goodluck Jonathan left in the reserve for his successor, President Muhammadu Buhari.

Recall that on Monday, September 12, President Muhammadu Buhari dismissed the 16 years leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as extremely wasteful and of no relevance, alleging that the previous governments of Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan, left nothing at all in reserve for his administration.

Buhari made the allegation while speaking to journalists in his Daura hometown after the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, through a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Shehu Garba, saying:

‘‘I want Nigerians to realise that what this government inherited after 16 years of the PDP government was no savings, no infrastructure, no power, no rail, no road and no security.”

Based on the above statement, President Buhari pleaded with Nigerians to give him more time to repair the damage of the past.

However, going through the archives of information, we stumbled on the statement by the former military general, Olusegun Obasanjo, who while commenting on oil prices in the course of the interview, compared the opportunities he had with that of Buhari and concluded that President Muhammadu Buhari was lucky.

His words:

“When I assumed office in 1999, I inherited $3.7 billion in reserve, while Buhari met $30 billion, almost 10 times of what I met then, and the price of oil then was $9. When it got to $20, I was dancing.

“I know the price is down now and with time, it will jump up again. What Buhari is doing currently is preparing ground for Nigeria to take advantage when it goes up again.”

Now, who is lying and who is telling us the truth? Did Jonathan leave any reserve for the present government or not? Sooner or later, the real truth will be revealed!
