Blacks are not safe in the United States. Following the recent killings of coloured people by the US police, some American celebrities like Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson and more have come together to detail 23 ways black people have been killed in the history of America, invariably saying, blacks could be killed for doing any of those 23 things.
One example was the death of Amadou Diallo, a 23-year-old immigrant from Guinea, who was shot and killed by four New York police officers in 1999 for holding up a wallet.
In the clip, which is in support of Alicia Keys ‘We Are Here’ movement, each celebrity mentioned one way a black life has been cut short by the US police, in honor of the victim. Taraji P. Henson spoke about Alton Sterling, a CD seller who was shot by two police officers a week ago. Alicia Keys mentioned Sandra Bland’s case who was shot for failing to signal a lane change.
Beyonce honoured Philando Castile who was shot and killed by a police officer in Falcon Heights in the presence of his girlfriend and her daughter. Chris Rock says “running into the bathroom in your own apartment,’ is one way black could get shot. It happened to Ramarley Graham, it can happen to any black. Even laughing can attract a bullet in the US.
Janelle Monae, Common, Pharrell, A$AP Rocky, Rihanna, Chris Rock, Queen Latifah and others also represent other victims. While Alicia Keys ends the video with her speech, ‘The time for change is now,’ she says. ‘We demand radical transformation to heal the long history of systemic racism so that all Americans have the equal right to live and to pursue happiness.’
This video simply addresses Us police brutality, saying justice needs to be served. Watch
