14 Easy Homemade Remedies For Skin Whitening

Below are some effective natural home remedies that brighten the skin and give it a natural glow, and easy methods on how to prepare and apply them. Basically, what these treatments do is to restrict the production of melanin in the skin. These remedies can be made using food items and fruits that we come across everyday.

1. Tomatoes


Fresh tomatoes have natural whitening properties, it is rich in vitamin C which makes it one the best remedies for brightening dark skins. It is also very good for oily skin and acne infected ones. Tomato has natural acidic composition that balances the pH of the skin to prevent the excessive oil, it also contains anti-oxidant properties which fight against free radicals that stop your skin from looking smooth and young.


Blend or grate one small tomato to extract its pulp. Apply the juice all over the body then allow to dry completely. Apply a second coating of this pulp on the same applied skin, then massage the skin for a minute of two. Rinse skin with water after 15 – 25 minutes. Do this daily to get rid of the dark pigmentation slowly on the skin.

NB: Tomatoes can also be mixed with few drops of lemon juice, milk or avocado, and applied in same manner to achieve same result.

2. Yogurt


Yogurt contains lactic acid which has the most gentle alpha hydroxy acids. This acid helps to exfoliate dead cells on the skin’s surface to make it clearer, smoother and brighter. Yogurt is also used to suppress the melanin production of the skin and it has many nutrients that the skin needs to glow.


Apply half cup of plain yogurt on the skin and rub in gently. Leave it for a few minutes and then rinse body with lukewarm water. Apply daily to completely lighten the skin.

3. Lemon Juice


Lemon juice contains natural astringent properties that help to tighten up the pores of your skin. It is rich in vitamin C and has natural acidic compositions. Lemons are also rich in anti-oxidants that helps lighten the skin, as well as remove scars.


Squeeze one lemon to extract its juice, then use a cotton ball to apply it by dabbing it in gently. Wash with water after 30 minutes. Daily application of this lemon juice will remove the dark discoloration of the skin. You can also cut the lemon into two halves and rub it directly on the skin, then wash afterwards. Also, powdered milk can be added to lemon juice and used in same manner to achieve same result.

4. Cucumber


Cucumber is known to have a cooling effect on the skin when applied regularly and this is suitable for all skin types. It binds the skin collagen and this ensures that your skin is firm and supple which in turn gives you a lighter and even skin tone.


Place a thin slice of cucumber directly on the dark patches of the skin where you want to lighten up the skin. Allow the skin to absorb the nutrients then wash skin with lukewarm water. Cucumber can also be placed on the eyes to remove eye bags and dark circles around the eyes. It can as well be blended and mixed with milk, then applied on the body and washed off after some minutes of air drying.

5. Rice Powder


Funny, but using grounded rice on your skin can lighten you. Rice contains Para aminobenzoic acid which is a natural sunscreen. This acid also facilitates the raise in vitamin C level in the body which is a very essential vitamin for healthy skin. Rice also contains ferulic acid, an anti-oxidant, and vitamin E, and all these are essential for preventing skin dehydration and aging. They protect the skin from harmful toxins and finally give you a brighter skin tone.


Grind raw rice into fine powder and add sufficient amount of milk, or water to it. Stir properly and apply the paste on your face, neck and other darker parts of the skin. Rinse off with warm water after 20 – 30 minutes. Repeat this 2 to 3 times a week to completely get rid of the dark skin.
