List of Federal Polytechnics in Nigeria and their Location

There are  over 35 Federal Polytechnics in Nigeria and they are found in most States of the country. While all of these polytechnics are great in their own right, Yaba College of Technology is the oldest and best in Nigeria. 

These polytechnics educate students in several industrial arts, applied science, and technical courses. More so, they handle National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in addition to a few offer certificate and degree courses.

1. Yaba College of Technology

Commonly known as YABATECH, Yaba College of Technology is rated as the best Federal polytechnic in Nigeria. It is also the first polytechnic in Nigeria and was founded in 1947 as a successor of Yaba Higher College, which was founded in 1932.

The college has eight faculties and runs certificate courses, OND, HND, Post-HND, Degree, and Postgraduate Diploma programs. It is affiliated with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the Federal University of Technology, Akure.

Some notable people to have graduated from YABATECH include Omotola Jalade EkeindeRuth KadiriJide Kosoko, Kaffy, and others such as Olusegun Adejumo, Josy Ajiboye, and Tim Owhefere.

2. Federal Polytechnic Ilaro

  • Location: Ilaro, Ogun State

Also known as FPI, Federal Polytechnic Ilaro is the second-best polytechnic in Nigeria. It was established in 1979 and started to use Anglican Grammar School as its temporary site until 1983, when it was moved to its permanent location at Ilaro/Oja-Odan Road, Ilaro.

The institution has six faculties: the School of Management Studies, School of Environmental Studies, School of Engineering, School of Applied Science, School of Information Communication and Technology(SCIT), and School of Part-Time Studies.

Some famous people who graduated from the school include actors Lizzy Anjorin and Biola Adekunle.

3. Auchi Polytechnic

Location: Okene Road, Auchi, Edo State

Auchi Polytechnic has graduated famous people such as Hanks Anuku, Tom Ikimi, and Paul Obazele. It is renowned for its academic excellence and being one of Nigeria’s oldest polytechnics. The school has also maintained a top list in Nigeria, West Africa, and Africa.

It was established in 1963 as a gift by the British Government. It initially opened as a technical college before it became a full-fledged polytechnic in 1973 and was run by the former Bendel State and later Edo State. It became a Federal institution in 1994 and now has seven faculties.

4. Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti

With five faculties, Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekito offers both National and Higher National Diploma, as the other Federal Polytechnics on this list. The institution has seen transformation since it was first established in Jos, Plateau State, in 1977. It was first introduced as a college of technology. Subsequently, it was moved to Akure, Ondo State, and it became a polytechnic in 1979.

The school moved to its permanent and present location, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, in 1982.

5. Federal Polytechnic Nekede

  • Location: Nekede, Owerri West local government area, Imo State

The Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, formerly known as the College of Technology, Owerri, was founded in 1978. It was later moved to Nekede, Owerri, in 1981. The school was initially a state government institution and in 1987, its name was changed to The Polytechnic Nekede. Years later, it became The Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri.

The school, which has seven faculties, is listed as one of the best polytechnics in Nigeria. Also, several notable people, including Nollywood actor Okey Uzoeshi, are a product of the institution.

6. Federal Polytechnic Ede

  • Location: Ede, Osun State

In 1992, the Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun State, was established. Its aim is to provide broad courses in different fields. The institution has been recorded as one of the best federal polytechnics in Nigeria. It exposes its students to five faculties and several other departments.

7. Federal Polytechnic Bauchi

The Federal Polytechnic Bauchi is one of the most renowned institutions in Northern Nigeria. It was established in 1979 and quickly became notable as FPTB.

The school offers over 20 in the National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programs. In 2020, it received approval to run nine degree courses that will be affiliated with Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi.

8. Petroleum Training Institute (P.T.I) Effurun 

  • Location: Effurun, Delta State

Petroleum Training Institute Effurun boasts of graduating over 50,000 students since its establishment in 1973. It also offers 20 courses and 150 specialized courses.

It was created to raise professionals in the petroleum industry. The institution awards General Welding Certificates, National Diploma, and HND Higher National Diploma certificates.

9. Federal Polytechnic Offa

  • Location: Offa, Kwara State

Federal Polytechnic Offa offers National Diploma, Higher National Diploma, and Degree certificates. It is also affiliated with the Federal University of Technology Minna, a university that offers some of the best engineering courses in Nigeria.

It was founded in 1992 and has been ranked as one of the best Federal polytechnics in Nigeria. To further reaffirm its place as a prestigious institution, the school invented solar-powered machines in 2020.

The machines include a solar-powered automated hand-wash sanitizer system and an Ultraviolet wave sanitizer system. The purpose of these machines were to help curb the spread of the deadly corona virus.

10. Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana

In October 2008, Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic was selected for the establishment of a world-class Information and Communication Technology center for the Southeast regional center by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This was in accordance with the promotion of more academic excellence.

The institution was founded in 1981 and was named after the first regional governor of Eastern Region, Nigeria. In its earliest days, it began its sessions at the Federal Government College Okposi before moving to its current location in 1987.

The school has five faculties and each presents excellent courses, which have contributed to its fame and recognition in Ebonyi State and in Nigeria at large.
