Brief History of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic

Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic was created on November 11, 1991, by Akwa Ibom State Government Edict. The decision to build the institution was made after the formation of Akwa Ibom State from Cross River State in 1987.

The facility was officially dedicated on Friday, January 24, 1992. 961 students were enrolled and registered in the Ministry of Education’s fifteen educational programmes. Science, Environmental Studies, Communication Arts, and Engineering were offered. The matching staff strength was 3 (three) principal officers and 492 (academic and non-academic) personnel, most of whom were moved from Polytechnic Calabar.

The position is distinct; the total staff strength is 676, with 253 academic employees (Lecturers) and 244 senior non-academic staff. The student population has also grown. However, the number of academic programmes fell to 8 (eight) from 1996 to 2000 due to some programmes not being accredited by NBTE.

NBTE has currently fully accredited 15 (fifteen) programmes at the National Diploma (ND) and also accredited 7 (seven) Higher National Diploma (HND). The Polytechnic Governing Council approved the establishment of part-time/evening programmes in all NBTE-approved programmes beginning with the 2006/2007 session. Lectures have now started in all feasible programmes.

Consequences of not paying school fees in Akwa Ibom Polytechnic

Let us look at the consequences of not paying the school fees in the following two categories:

  • Newly admitted students
  • Regular Students
Newly admitted students

This category of students needs to pay the school fees. We are referring to the ND-1 and HND-1 students. Failure to pay before the deadline can lead to the revocation of the admission letter by the admission office. This is not what any admitted student will ever wish for.

Regular Students

The consequence of not paying the school fees for this category of students is the denial of exams. If they are eventually pardoned, the polytechnic can not proceed with their clearance to collect the certificate until the fees are duly completed.
