Waje is a talented Nigerian singer, songwriter and actress. For her, W.A.J.E is an acronym for Words Aren’t Just Enough and in fact, if you have listened to one of this damsel’s rendition, you will also conclude that words aren’t just enough to properly describe the power and potential of Aituaje Iruobe’s vocals. Waje also means laughter in her native tongue.
Born on September 1, 1980, as Aituaje Aina Vivian Ebele Iruobe in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. The family later relocated to Benin City in Edo State where she grew up. The songstress is of Igbo descent – her mother is from the south-east and was divorced from her father when Waje was still very young.
Waje attended the Word of Faith Group of Schools. Her incredibly outstanding vocals in the choir got the heart of late Archbishop Benson Idahosa of Church of God Mission International. He was impressed to the point that he took up the sponsorship of her education during her Secondary School days.
Proceeding to the University, Waje did not give up singing. She performed in shows and school functions. She graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with a degree in social work.
As she studied, Waje also gave part-time attention to other interests like tourism.
Waje, as professionally known, has a phenomenal vocal strength. A singer who covers three vocal octaves is indeed ultimately gifted in the field. She recalls listening to international vocal icons like Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin.
Waje joined the eastern-based record label, Dome, where she released a couple of singles – Somewhere and Kolo.
Professionally, she launched her presence into the Nigerian music scene in 2007 with a remix of P Square’s Omoge mi. She started off with free shows. Then in 2008, she became a faceless success with Nigerian P Square’s hit track “Do Me”. She also worked on a couple of songs with the duo.
The sonorous singing bird won the first runner-up in an MTV Base reality TV show, Advanced Warning. In subsequent years, Waje featured in songs of a good number of high profile Nigerian artistes like M.I with “One Naira” and Tiwa Savage. She has had the privilege of sharing the stage with international acts like Kerry Hilson and Wyclef Jean.
In 2013, Waje finally released her self-titled album and in no time, she became a household name.
Waje is arguably the best Nigerian vocalist of all time. She has successfully worked on a wide range of music genres- R&B, Pop, Soul, Rock, blues and hip-hop soul.
In 2015, Waje debuted her skill as an actress in Stanlee Ohikhuare’s Tunnel. She starred alongside top media personalities like Femi Jacobs, Patrick Doyle, Nse- Etim and Lepacious Bose
In addition to her already tremendous package, the songstress is a humanitarian. Little wonder why she studied social work in the university. Waje has devoted a great deal of time to her native community in Edo State Nigeria, assisting in education and mental health projects. She renders these charitable gestures under Waje’s Safe House.
She kicked off a food campaign with food enthusiasts, Chef Eros and Jamie Oliver in May 2016.
Waje features with Tuface, Patoranking and Timi Dakolo as judges for The Voice Nigeria. Stemming from her experience as a young mother, she is passionate about women empowerment and enlightenment.
As a matter of fact, Waje ranks high as one of the Nigerian female vocalists with an influx of nominations and winnings in music award shows.
She got a nomination for the best R&B artiste for the 2016 Nigerian Entertainment Awards. She has had over 15 nominations and won over 8 Nigerian awards for her unique and amazing vocals.
