He was brought up together with his sister, Sharyl Bailey, in Michigan, where he attended Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor. He played football here before going to the University of Louisville, where he also played for the Louisville Cardinals football team until 1994, when he was undrafted.

At the age of 23, he started playing for the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL, where he spent almost five seasons before he joined the New England Patriots in 2000. Just two years before he finally retired from playing as a professional American football player, Aaron Bailey welcomed his son Amara Bailey on February 17, 2004. Amari was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to his father and former girlfriend, a model and social media influencer named Johanna Leia Edelberg.

Amari was mostly brought up by his mother, with some involvement from his father after the relationship between the two came to an end. Amari has mixed ethnicity as while he is African American roots thanks to his father, he is partly Jewish on his mother’s side.

Amari attended Sierra Canyon High School in the Los Angeles area, where he played basketball, and from there, he went to the University of California, Los Angeles. It was from here that he entered the NBA draft in 2022 and was selected with the 41st overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets.
