Former Chelsea Legendary Striker, Gianfranco Zola Appointed New Birmingham City Manager

Birmingham City has substantively appointed Gianfranco Zola as Gary Rowett’s successor.

The club had sacked former coach Gary Rowett despite Birmingham being placed seventh in the Championship race.

Zola was appointed not long after Birmingham terminated Rowett’s contract and those of his backroom staff on Wednesday.

Zola is back in England after having managed West Ham United and Watford.

The former Chelsea striker was in the running to take over at Hull City in the summer.

The 50-year-old was keen to get back into management in England and has finally gotten his chance to return.

Birmingham’s new coach, Gianfranco Zola was interested in getting a management deal to takeover at St Andrew’s.

The former Parma and Chelsea forward’s agent traveled to London to meet Birmingham representatives to finalize contract details.


The Midlands club finally confirmed his appointment on Wednesday evening.

The sacking of the 42-year-old Rowett came as a surprise with Birmingham outside the play-off places only on goal difference.

They won their last game against Ipswich on Tuesday by 2 goals to 1 at home.

Birmingham’s last two games were 4-0 and 3-0 defeats to Newcastle and Barnsley respectively.

However, they were the only two reverses in their past seven league matches.

An official statement from the club read:

“Gary’s contract, and those of his backroom staff – Kevin Summerfield, Mark Sale, Kevin Poole and Darren Robinson – have been terminated with immediate effect.

“This has not been an easy decision to make.

“The Board would like to thank Gary and his backroom staff for their efforts and wish them all the best for the future.

“Gary came in and immediately stabilized the team amid difficult circumstances and during his tenure improved the Club’s fortunes on the field.

“He has conducted himself professionally on behalf of the Club at all times and there is a genuine sadness at this course of action.”

Meanwhile, the new owners of the club, Trillion Trophy Asia Limited (TTAL) remains determined to lead the Club to a bright and exciting future.
