Yemi Blaq Hails From Ondo State

Born on 19th May 1978, Yemi is a native of Ondo State in the southwestern part of Nigeria. He was born in Lagos, Nigeria, to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Olatunji Blaq. Not much is known about Yemi Blaq’s family background, but he reportedly grew up alongside four artistically inclined siblings.

Yemi received his primary education in Lagos State, where he was the school’s first Head Boy. His family later moved to Ondo State, and there, he completed his secondary education at Adeyemi Demonstration Secondary school and obtained his West African Examination Certificate. After that, he proceeded to the University of Lagos, where he acquired a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts.

Yemi Blaq Started Acting as a Child

Yemi Blaq started showing interest in acting from a young age, precisely in his primary school days. Developing his acting skills, he participated in school stage plays, one of which was when he acted as the judge in the play, Incorruptible Judge.

Even as a child, his acting skills were quite obvious, and his teacher was very impressed, gave him a lot of encouragement and support, and further told his mother that Blaq was a born actor and must not miss the track. Meanwhile, Yemi once disclosed that his greatest passion is writing songs and that music was his first interest in the entertainment industry, even though he was not able to make good success in it.

He Had His First Professional Movie Role in 2005

After primary school, Yemi did not act again until 2005, after he graduated from the university and eventually made it to the Nollywood industry. He had registered with the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Lagos chapter, with the aim of becoming an actor. Then, he started going for movie auditions and was getting minor and supporting roles.

Yemi Blaq, however, rose to fame after featuring in the Nollywood blockbuster movie, Lost of Lust alongside Mercy Johnson. Taking advantage of his big break into the limelight, Yemi got more prominent roles and today has appeared in more than 200 Nollywood movies.

Alongside Nollywood legend Genevieve Nnaji, Yemi acted as the lead character in the movie My Idol, which won him an award at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Two of his recent movies are Cultural Clash and Shadow Parties, released in 2018.

Cultural Clash tells the story of a typical Nigerian home with core traditional values who moved from their Roswell Mansion to the ghetto to survive hard times. In an interesting turn of events, they discovered that money and riches are the least of their problems. On the other hand, Shadow Parties tells the story of love and intermarriage.

The movie generally revolves around political struggles that would later convert into trading in arms and ammunition, leading to the loss of innocent lives. Yemi Blaq is well known for his good acting prowess, which has made him stand out as one of the most sought-after actors in the Nigerian film industry. Their union is blessed with one child, a son named Kanyinsola Olatunji. Kay, as he is simply called, was born on 5th October 2007, and he is currently 16 years old.

In Yemi’s words, “One of the happiest days of my life was when my son came to this world. It was a beautiful experience, and I actually cried when he was delivered, and I was asked to carry him.” Though he does not share details about his son’s personal life, we guess the teenage boy would still be receiving his secondary education.
