The current CBN Governor as of 2024, is Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso. He assumed office on September 22, 2023, taking over from Godwin Emefiele who served from 2014 to 2023.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is the highest monetary authority in Nigeria. Since its inception on 1st July 1958, it has been headed by 11 governors, including the current one. The current CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele<\/a>, is the 11th and the first governor to serve for two tenures since 1999. Governors come and go and changes and reforms are introduced. Let’s take a look at the current CBN governor and the 10 past governors to see their contributions to the banking sector and the Nigerian economy at large.<\/p>\n

Olayemi Michael “Yemi” Cardoso is the Current\u00a0 CBN Governor<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Following his nomination by President Bola Tinubu, and confirmation by the senate, Yemi Cardoso assumed office as the new CBN governor on September 22, 2023. Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso is an accomplished Nigerian banker, chartered stockbroker, and public policy expert with over 30 years of experience in the public and private financial sectors.<\/p>\n

Yemi holds a B.Sc. in managerial and administrative studies from Aston University and a Master\u2019s degree in public administration from Harvard Kennedy School. Before his new office as CBN governor, Cardoso served as the Commissioner for the Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget when President Bola Tinubu governed Lagos and was chairman of the board of Citibank Nigeria.<\/p>\n

Cardoso is a member of the advisory board of Lagos Business School and chairman of the board of the African Venture Philanthropy Alliance. He is also the founding chairman and co-chair of Ehingbeti Summit, the Lagos State Economic Summit. While many remain sceptical about the fate of the Nigerian economy, there are beliefs that he could successfully take the reins after Godwin Emefiele’s nine-year reign.<\/p>\n
