Some of the positions he occupied before joining politics include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He worked as a Preventive Officer, the Nigerian Customs Service<\/li>\n<li>He was a Science Inspector of Education, the Rivers State Ministry of Education<\/li>\n<li>Worked as a Lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences, Rivers State College of Education<\/li>\n<li>In 1993, he was Assistant Director of Ecology, Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC) in charge of Environmental Protection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Upon joining politics in 1998, he served as deputy governor of Bayelsa State. This was the first political position he took and it marked the beginning of his political career. As a deputy, Goodluck&#8217;s activities were constitutionally limited. He was loyal to his boss, governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, until 2005 when he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/nigerian-governor-held-for-money-laundering-1.1185919\">charged with money laundering<\/a> in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Alamieyeseigha was arrested after police found \u00a31m in cash at his London address worth \u00a310m. Although he was immune from legal actions until the end of his tenure as a governor in 2007, Alamieyeseigha was arrested for forfeiting a \u00a31.25m bail bond. Following his arrest, the Bayelsa State Assembly impeached him, thereby leaving his seat vacant for the deputy to occupy.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan, who was recognized as the most hardworking deputy governor in Nigeria as a result of his support for Diepreye, was then propelled to occupy his boss&#8217;s seat. He and Yar\u2019Adua were elected in April and inaugurated in May 2007 and their victory marked the first peaceful transition of power from one elected civilian leader to another since Nigeria attained independence from Britain in 1960. Jonathan also became the first civilian from Nigeria\u2019s South-South geopolitical zone to hold such a high political office.<\/p>\n<p>One of his main successes during his tenure as vice-president was his negotiation with Niger Delta militants who were fighting against petroleum companies operating in the Delta region. When President Yar\u2019Adua, a Muslim northerner, became ill in 2009, midway through his term, Jonathan inherited the presidential seat. He then nominated Kaduna State governor, Namadi Sambo, to replace him as Vice President.<\/p>\n<p>In a bid to fulfil his promise to have regular interaction with the common public, so that he is able to attend to their regular needs and disputes, he subsequently opened his own Facebook page. That made him the first Nigerian head to open a social media page. A while later, the president used the medium to formally announce his bid for the presidency. Jonathan won the 2011 presidential election and he held this position until 2015.<\/p>\n<p>His \u201cI had no shoes\u201d campaign mantra in the run-up election was defining for his party. It was a theme that swayed millions of votes in his favor. For Nigeria, it was, perhaps, the first time millions of poor and ordinary Nigerians rose up to embrace one of their own. They found in Mr. Jonathan the embodiment of the Nigerian dream. By winning the 2011 election, Jonathan also became one of the first Presidents of Nigeria who did not have a political or military background.<\/p>\n<p>However, his political ambition was truncated in 2015 when he failed to win reelection that would have made him one of the longest-serving politically elected leaders. He became the first sitting president to be defeated in a Nigerian election when he lost to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/buzznigeria.com\/facts-must-general-muhammadu-buhari\/\">Muhammadu Buhari<\/a>. Some people cited the deep corruption and money laundering that existed during his tenure as the reason for his loss to Buhari, with over 2.5 million votes.<\/p>\n<p>His tenure also experienced the maximum number of bombings and riots by both his rivals who did not accept a Southern Nigerian as the Head of a country and the Boko Haram insurgency that led to the killing, maiming and displacing of Nigerians in mostly northern states in its bid to form an Islamic caliphate within Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Among many other reasons mentioned to be behind Jonathan&#8217;s loss of power to Buhari, the former leader also blamed northern leaders who wanted power returned to their region for sabotaging his reelection bid. He said he faced a barrage of opposition from Northern leaders and socio-political groups who felt he was usurping power from the region. One such statement was the one he issued on 31 March 2015 &#8211; &#8220;Nobody\u2019s ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian&#8221;.
