About one hundred widows staged a peaceful protest over the weekend in Chikun local government area of Kaduna State over police brutality and unjust arrest of a colleague, Florence Emmanuel, whose residence the police raided to arrest her son and his wife over an unfounded allegation, torturing and stripping her naked in the process.
Dressed in black, the widows marched through the major highway in Kamazo area, went to the house of the village head as well as those of other chiefs to expressing their displeasure over the brutal act.
A source said that trouble started when youths from Kamazo area staged a protest last week demanding an explanation from their leader, Donald (Sarkin Samari) over recurrent blackout in the area, who according to them, has been collecting N5,000 and above from houses and households to ensure power stability and help ensure quick supply of transformers to the area by the power distribution company. But instead of giving them an explanation, ‘Donald’ organized some youths to beat them up and sent some policemen who stormed Florence Emmanuel’s house by 2:00am to arrest her children as part of the protesters.
Florence demanded to know their mission as they came in mufti and did not identify themselves as policemen but they pounced on her and beating without mercy and stripped her naked. According to the source;
“Later that night, at about 2:00am several policemen directed by Donald then stormed Florence Emmanuel’s house in some vehicles to arrest her son and his wife, saying they were part of the people that pelted Donald’s house. The police were in mufti and did not identify themselves. Some of them were even drunk. So, Florence then demanded explanation for their mission and to know who they were. But rather than explaining, they pounced on her and beat her mercilessly and even stripped her naked. She had to pull her curtain to cover her nakedness.
“They even used their stick popularly known as ‘Talk True’ on her and it got broken. The police having brutalized her went away with her son and his wife. In the morning we all ran there and advised her go to the hospital, but she said she wanted to know where her son and his wife were taken to. She found them in Sabon-Tasha police station. Upon siting her that morning in their station, the police arrested her as well. And as we speak, she is still in detention. We have the broken part of their stick to show the world what they did to our colleague,” the source said.
Some of the widows questioned the detention of Florence Emmanuel for over five days now which is against the stipulated time of keeping any offender or suspect in custody for interrogation.
