Ibiere Maclayton was the wife of famous Nigerian comedian Julius Agwu. The two separated in 2022 after 14 years of marriage. Before their separation their marriage was blessed with two children.
The stand-up comedian, actor, singer, and MC Julius Agwu is one of the biggest entertainment consultants and motivational speakers in Nigeria but he is best known for his roles in comedy shows like Crack Ya Ribs, and Festival of Love. However, for a plethora of reasons, he recently joined the class of celebrities with failed marriages.
Julius Agwu and Ibiere Maclayton Got Married in 2008
Julius Agwu and Ibiere got married on May 31, 2008, at St Paul’s Cathedral Church in Port Harcourt, and while further details about how they met have not been revealed, Julius Agwu said that he and Ibiere dated for some years before agreeing to settle down as a couple.
On her father’s insistence, Ibiere suspended marriage plans with the comedian until she completed her degree, NYSC, and master’s education. She eventually graduated with her master’s in Oil and Gas Engineering from Robert Gordon University, Scotland, before proceeding with marriage plans.
As both proud indigenes of Rivers State, the then couple had their traditional marriage at Abonnema, a large town in the Kalabari Kingdom, on Thursday, 29th of May 2008. It was followed by an elaborate wedding ceremony on the 31st of May 2008.
Ibiere’s profession is not known but given Julius Agwu’s profession and reputation, particularly in the entertainment industry, it’s no surprise that his colleagues from the Nigerian Showbiz industry were in attendance. The list of celebrities present at the Civic Centre where the wedding reception took place included the likes of Ali Baba, Genevieve Nnaji, Rita Dominic, KC Presh, Francis Duru, Segun Arinze, Kate Henshaw-Nuttal, DJ Jimmy Jatt, and Ejike Asiegbu.
Julius Agwu and His Wife Separated After 14 Years
In November 2022, Julius Agwu and his estranged wife, Ibiere, joined the celebrity couples that made headlines for failed marriages. Their failed marriage initially became public as a rumour until they confirmed it.
The comedian was the first to publicly address the rumour, claiming his wife stated that she was tired of being married to him. The [age dob=”19730417″]-year-old stand-up comedian was speaking with a media personality, Ifedayo Olarinde, aka Freeze, when he alleged that his wife chose to leave on her own terms and not because they had issues.
He also tried to link his health issues to the cause of their separation. Julius underwent brain tumour surgery in 2015 and in 2016, just two days before his presumed come-back to the comedy scene, he passed out and spent three months in a coma. Julius was preparing for his show in London when he slumped and was rushed to the hospital
“My wife said she was not marrying me again. She said she was tired of the marriage. That’s why I thank God that I’m alive. I have a saying that ‘Satan works in mysterious ways, and God works in miraculous ways’.”
It was in April 2022 that the news about Ibiere leaving Julius Agwu began to make waves with many accusing her of abandoning him because of his health condition.
Meanwhile, Ibiere not only reverted to her maiden name (Mrs Maclayton) but also used her Instagram handle to react to people’s perceived judgment of her actions by advising her fans and anyone that cares o listen about not voicing out every thoughts or opinion on certain matters.
She said voicing out your thoughts most times may relegate you to a level of stupidity. “Not every thought or opinion on certain matters should be voiced out. Most times, you only just end up confirming your level of stupidity to people”.
Julius Agwu’s marital failure was one of the many known sad celebrity love stories that hit the timeline in 2022. Among the celebrity marriages that also crashed the same year include Bright Okpocha (Basketmouth) and his wife Elsie, Korra Obidi and Justin, Anita Isama and Paul Okoye Dean. Julius and his wife were blessed with two children-a boy and a girl – and apparently, they are living with their mother abroad where she relocated to.
