The much anticipated Nollywood movie, The Wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai, which was released in cinemas across the country on Friday December 15, has raked in more than N73 million on its opening weekend, its producers have said.
The feat breaks the N36 million record set by the movie’s prequel, “The Wedding Party 1,” on its opening weekend last year, making it the highest ever in the Nigerian box office.
One of the producers of the movie, Ms. Mo Abudu, Chief Executive of Ebony Studios, made the success of the sequel known on her Instagram page.
“What can I say, but thank you, Lord. Thank you, Nigeria. The Wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai now goes down as the highest opening weekend ever at the Nigerian box office for both Nollywood and international films!
“Last year we did N36m on #TWP1 for our opening weekend, now we have doubled that, this is evidence that Yes We Can and we have!
“Nigeria let’s continue to break this record together, to be the highest grossing film of all time so that we can tell the world that We Can.”
The Wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai plot focuses on Dozie’s (Banky W – the groom in TWP1) brother, Nonso (played by Enyinna Nwigwe), who has continued his romance with Deirdre (played by Daniella Down), the British bridesmaid.
Nonso proposes by accident while on a dinner date and sets off a chain of hilarious events. Deirdre’s British family and some members of Nonso’s family were against the pairing, much to the chagrin of the lovebirds.
However, after an unpleasant introduction ceremony in Lagos, both families reluctantly agree to a wedding in Dubai, setting off other comic and chaotic episodes of the Wedding Party story.
Just like “The Wedding party 1” was a blockbuster, much had been expected from the second part of the inter-tribal-marriage-themed movie, which recently translated to the real-life marriage of its main characters, Dunni (Adesua) and Dozie (Banky W).
Following its debut, the movie has got lots of reactions on social media. From posts and comments on social media, it is obvious that Nigerians are having mixed reactions on The Wedding Party 2.
While some believe it has lived up to its expectations, others think it is just overrated, overhyped and a total waste of time.
Some viewers, who spoke with The Nation shared their views and opinions about the movie.

According to Anie Ufia, a student of Unilag she said:
“Uh, I agree that the movie was overhyped but it’s not so bad. The cast was okay. I like the fact that they brought in Nollywood legends like Patience Ozokwor and Chinwetalu Agu. The humor too was on point with Chigul and Seyilaw, loved their scenes.
One of my problems with the movie however is that it’s too short. It seemed like I was watching an episode of Jenifa’s diary. They didn’t work on building the story, instead left the audience to figure out the rest. I expected much more than was given from Wedding party 2. I don’t even advise them to do a Wedding Party 3.”
Damilola Agunloye, an entrepreneur feels the movie had elements of exaggerations. She said:
“Exaggerations in the movie was uncalled for. Why did they have to put in too many comedians and some were not even funny like AY. The white girl’s father did better with the comedy than our Nigerian comedians. And the movie ended too abruptly.
“Everyone in the cinema shouted when the credits started rolling. I agree they shouldnt bother with a part 3. After overhyping, people were looking forward to something splendid, people were disappointed.”
An On-Air Presenter with eNRadio, Samad Abdurrahman said: “The cast is great although having too many stars in one movie will be a bit jam-packed, cos not all the stars will get enough screen time, except them being there is just to promote the movie itself.
It’s going to be filled with unnecessary and excessive jokes. Cos of the comedic characters starring in it. But overall I like the concept, the brother proposing to the white babe by mistake”.
The public, has been reacting on Twitter and here are few of their reactions:

No one has given #TWP2 the thumps up yet. I wanted to go watch it with my wife today. People who have watched aren’t encouraging me

Sometimes it's just better to retire after your last success. This is how I felt about #WeddingParty2 it was boring, bleh and unnecessary.
