Valencia Sporting Director, Jesus Garcia Pitarch, has confirmed they have held transfer talks with Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel.
The La Liga club director admitted that the Nigeria skipper is considering a move to the Mestalla Stadium after discussions held on Christmas day.
29-year-old Mikel, who is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, is yet to make a first-team appearance for Antonio Conte’s all-conquering side.
And speculations over his future away from the Stamford Bridge has grown with Marseille, initially, looking to be in pole position to land his signature in the January transfer window.
But Los Che’s director revealed that he engaged in negotiations with the defensive midfielder on Christmas Day and confirmed that the Olympic Bronze medallist may consider ending his 10-year tenure with the blues and move to the Spanish League following their meeting.
“In the case of Obi Mikel, with Chelsea’s permission, I met with him in London on Christmas day. I informed him of the option [of joining Valencia]. He said he would think about it”, he said.
With just three wins in their 15 league games, 17th in La Liga and level on 12 points with Sporting Gijon, who are in the relegation zone, Valencia are looking to reinforce their squad this month in a bid to turn their fortunes around.
Mikel has fallen out of favour at Chelsea following the arrival of Antonio Conte and is yet to make a single appearance for the Blues this season.
The Nigeria international is yet to be named in a matchday squad by the former Juventus boss and has been linked with a number of transfers.
Mikel has also been linked with MLS and the Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG.
