Nollywood actress, Toyin Abraham, has shared her success story, revealing she once abused hard drugs like marijuana and codeine, and was involved in other vices.
Speaking at the 2017 edition of “Success Story Africa“, held at the TLC Auditorium, Lagos, Toyin opened up on how she suffered from drug abuse with marijuana, codeine and other vices but realized that she had to stop them to attain her greatness.
The actress also revealed that she once hawked plantain chips to help feed her family. She said growing up was not easy for her because her family was not financially buoyant, although things worked out for them because they worked hard and were “spiritually buoyant”. Hear her:
“You need to stop bad habits. I was involved in a lot of vices and it became worse last year.
“I abused drugs and I am not ashamed to say it because it’s now a thing of the past. They say codeine makes you high; I took a lot. I smoked a lot and I didn’t even know I looked horrible because I was so skinny.
“If you came to my house last year, you would meet a lot of people and you won’t want to leave because we smoked, gossiped about people and what have you.”
She also talked about the mistakes she has made in the entertainment industry and how she has not let the negativity shape her.
“I made a lot of mistakes when I began acting and that was because I did not have plans. I just wanted to be known.
“But, I now know that being popular isn’t the same thing as being successful. When I got into the industry and the fame became too much, I became irresponsible.
“I could not boast of N1 million in 2016. I was making money and I wanted to feel among. When one of our colleagues bought a car, it was trouble because we all strove to buy the same car or a bigger one.
“I had to change my circle for good and this change started in March 2017,” she said.
Success Stories Africa, an impactful gathering of young people in developing communities, is targeted at increasing empowered youths above the weaklings.

While admitting that her marriage crash caused her so much pain to the point of resorting to alcohol and drugs, the actress said:
“I didn’t plan for a broken home, I didn’t plan for a broken marriage. After my marriage, there was so many negativity and I was emotionally carried away.
”I realised I didn’t love myself and I wanted people around to love me. I didn’t focus on things that really mattered. I was focusing on things that don’t matter and I always choose people before me.
“I did not love myself enough. I was losing touch with things that used to work for me because I was involved with negative habits like drugs, smoking, and codeine. All these things were empowering my negative energy. So I had to stop.
“I realised I deserved more. I focus more on bigger pictures. I decided to change my team and few people around me and I decided to change my habits. I stopped doing a lot of things. A lot of bad things that brings out the negative energy in me.
“I didn’t heal before jumping into another relationship but I thought I was going to be healed by another relationship. I sought help. I changed some people and friends around me and I stopped my negative habits.
“The battle is 100% over. I have left my past behind I’m looking forward to the future. I’ll let everything that happened in the past be in the past. That’s why I agreed to change my name. I’m in the future. I thank God for giving me another chance.”
