A Florida woman, Tina Farrington, has been charged with first-degree murder for allegedly suffocating her four-year-old daughter and throwing her body in a dumpster.
Tina Farrington allegedly suffocated the little girl identified as Taina, with a pillow on Halloween after becoming angry with her, according to an arrest report.
The woman was home with Taina and the child’s younger brother when the alleged killing took place around 7pm.
Tina became upset after Taina talked back to her, according to the Sun Sentinel. She then ‘lured’ Taina and her brother to her bedroom, where she used a pillow to suffocate her daughter, police said.
She then hid the child’s body in the trunk of her 2013 Nissan Altima until she noticed a foul odor and then allegedly moved the body early around 1am on Sunday to the dumpster in her apartment complex.
The body of Taina Paige was eventually discovered by a man who was throwing out garbage on Sunday.
According to a Miami-Dade Police statement, the man found Taina’s body inside the trash bin at the Tuscany Place apartment complex southwest of Miami.
The girl’s mother, 31-year-old Tina Farrington, was held without bond Monday at the Miami-Dade County jail on a first-degree murder charge.
Investigators said they were able to see bruises on the arms, legs and torso of the dead girl, despite the child’s body beginning to decompose.
According to police, Farrington confessed to killing her daughter. Jail records did not show whether Farrington had an attorney.
The family set up a GoFundMe account for Taina. It has raised more than $12,000 for the child’s family.
A similar story also happened in Florida in October when Veronica Green Posey, a 325-pound (150-kilogram) woman killed her 9-year-old cousin by sitting on the child as punishment.
The child’s mother, Grace Smith, told investigators that she called 64-year-old Posey to her house to help with disciplining the girl, Dericka. She also said that Posey hit the girl with a ruler and metal pipe before she child ran to an armchair.
During the punishment, Dericka told Posey and her parents that she couldn’t breathe. This was after Posey had sat on her for about 10 minutes.
But the lady still stayed on the chair for an additional two minutes before getting up, according to James Smith, the child’s father.
When Posey got up, Dericka wasn’t breathing. Authorities said Posey called 911 and started CPR on the child.
Paramedics and deputies responded to the family’s Pensacola home following the call. Posey told deputies she sat on Dericka Lindsay as discipline “for being out of control.”
Posey was arrested and charged with homicide and cruelty toward a child while the girl’s parents were charged with child neglect.
