Nigeria’s Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka has proved to be a man of his words as he confirmed the destruction of his US residency green card which he said he would destroy and leave the United States of America if Donald Trump won the presidential election.
The award-winning author made the shocking revelation on Thursday, December 1. BBC quoted Soyinka as saying at an education conference at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa:
“I have already done it, I have disengaged (from the United States). I have done what I said I would do.
“I had a horror of what is to come with Trump… I threw away the (green) card, and I have relocated, and I’m back to where I have always been (meaning his homeland, Nigeria.).”
His hate for a US with Trump as the president notwithstanding, the prolific playwright, novelist and poet said he would not discourage others from applying for a green card.
“It’s useful in many ways. I wouldn’t for one single moment discourage any Nigerians or anybody from acquiring a green card… but I have had enough of it.”

Though it was not reported on this platform because it was not confirmed, a Facebook user recently posted a picture showing someone that appears to be Prof. Wole Soyinka stowing his bags in the overhead carriage of a plane on his return to Nigeria just after the US elections.
Soyinka who had been in the US and a scholar-in-residence at New York University’s Institute of African American Affairs this autumn told his students at Oxford University, England, that he would destroy his green card and leave the United States if Donald Trump was elected president.
“If in the unlikely event he does win, the first thing he’ll do is to say (that) all green-card holders must reapply to come back into the US. Well, I’m not waiting for that…, the moment they announce his victory, I will cut my green card myself and start packing up.”
