Four-time Grammy Award winning R and B singer, India Arie, will be performing in Lagos this June to headline a concert – the 5th edition of the Sax Appeal concert. The 41-year-old singer and actress was invited by Mike Aremu who is the host, and the concert will feature some of Nigeria’s finest singers including Praiz and Timi Dakolo. The event will hold at the prestigious Eko Hotel Convention Centre, Victoria Island on June 26, 2016.
The name “India Arie” is as popular as her songs, but not everyone can place a face to the legendary musician whose songs have a way of sedating its listeners. India Arie has sold over 3.3 million records in the US and 10 million worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards from her 21 nominations, including Best R&B Album, Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist.
She was born in Denver, Colorado to a family of stars. Her father is a former NBA basketball player and her mother is a singer cum stylist, who as a teenager was signed to Motown a platform opened for Stevie Wonder and Al Green. Although an america, the origin of India Arie can be traced to the Mende people of Sierra Leone, the Kru people of Liberia and the Fula people of Guinea-Bissau.
Arie released her debut album Acoustic Soul on March 27, 2001, and altogether she has six studio albums to her name – Voyage to India (2002), Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship (2006), Testimony: Vol. 2, Love & Politics (2009), Songversation (2013) and Christmas with Friends (2015).
In 2002, she got the record of “Most Nominations in One Night Without Winning”, with seven received nominations. She is an inspiration to most R&B singer and her fans in Nigeria can not wait to hear her perform live at the Sax Appeal concert come June.
