The Senate has rejected President Muhammadu Buhari’s ambassadorial list, citing reasons that the nomination pushed forward by the president lacks Federal Character.

Also this Wednesday morning, the senate resolved to summon the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, to appear before it over what they described as irregularities in the ambassadorial nominees list.

Senator Joshua Dariye (PDP-Plateau) moved that the Minister of Foreign Affairs be summoned to explain the irregularities surrounding the Ambassadorial nominees list.

Seconding the motion, Senate Whip, Sola Adeyeye (APC-Osun), said he had been receiving complaints by those who felt shortchanged.

Senator Sunday Ogbuoji (PDP-Ebonyi) also said the Ambassadorial nominees list had Assistant Directors on it while Directors who are qualified didn’t make it.

Senator Shehu Sani added that many states have complained that they have no representative in the ministerial list.

Also speaking, Foster Ogola (PDP-Bayelsa), complained that some states, including his own Bayelsa State, have no representation on the list. He suggested the list be returned to the president, requesting that all states be represented.

Earlier in the month (June 9th), President Buhari sent a list of 47 ambassadorial nominees to the Senate requesting screening and confirmation of the nominees to head various Nigeria’s foreign missions.
