Former aide to the immediate past President of Nigeria, Reno Omokri, has spoken in defence of Nigerian citizens, attacking Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka for insulting Nigerians who questioned his decision to destroy his American residency permit.
Omokri pointed out that Soyinka made the matter a public case by himself and since it was in the public domain, he should not complain about invasion of his privacy. He further said that Soyinka’s plan to leave Nigeria which the professor tagged ‘Wolexit’, would in no way have no adverse effect on the country.
“Wole Soyinka, a public figure who is the chief poke noser into the affairs of other public figures to the extent of calling a First Lady a ‘hippo’ is angry at invasion of his privacy!
“You publicly boasted that you would destroy (not throw away but destroy) your Green Card and now you are angry at Nigerians for invading your private matters that you yourself brought into the public domain!
“And he insults us by calling us ‘illiterate Nigerians’! That we don’t have a Nobel Prize does not mean that we don’t know how to reason. You can’t boast publicly about a thing and expect it to be privately discussed.
“Who cares if you change residency from Nigeria? When you were gone we survived. Even with you and Buhari, we will still survive!”
Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka had threatened to exit Nigeria as a response to the media harassment to which Nigerians have subjected him.
Mr. Soyinka, while speaking to reporters today at a media event held at Freedom Park on Lagos Island said he was embarrassed to share a country with some “imbeciles and morons.” He said:
“I should not be exiting the United States but Nigeria because the people on behalf of whom one has struggled all one’s life can be so slavish in mentality as to start querying the right of their champion to free speech.”
He continued, “I am embarrassed to occupy the same space as some imbeciles and morons,” adding that the exit from Nigeria can be “internal” or “external”.
Prof. Wole Soyinka also threatened to move the residence of his foundation, the Wole Soyinka Foundation, out of Nigeria and dared anybody to criticize his decision. “If the board agrees,” he said, “I will move the residency of my foundation out of the country,” he said.
Similarly, in an article shared by The Cable, Prof. Wole Soyinka described those asking him to destroy his US resident permit as ignorant considering the fact that there was no way the card could be literally shredded with the hand.
He insisted that he would leave the US as promised but questioned why many were interested in his decision as he had not called them to do same.
The article partly reads:
“Let me end with a Red Card to those noisome creatures, the nattering nit-wits of Internet: maybe Trumpland is not as despicable as the Naijaland you impose on our reality from your secure cesspits of anonymity.
“Go back to school. Your problem is ignorance, ignorance of whatever subject you so readily comment upon. Learn to study your subject before opening up on issues beyond your grasp. Sometimes you make one feel like swapping one green for another, out of embarrassment for occupying the same national space as you.”
