Rafiqul Islam, a 30-year-old Bangladeshi man blindfolded his wife and chopped off her fingers when he found out that she had started studying for a degree without his consent.
The man told his wife, Hawa Akhter, 21, that he was going to give her a surprise present, so she allowed him to blindfold her and tape her mouth. He then asked her to hold her hand out to receive the gift and when she did, he cut off all five of her fingers.
Afterward, he got one of his relatives to throw the fingers in a dustbin to ensure doctors could not reattach them.
Mr. Rafiqul Islam who is a migrant worker in the United Arab Emirates had warned his wife during a phone conversation that she would face “severe consequences” if she went against his orders.
“After he came back to Bangladesh, he wanted to have a discussion with me,” Akhter told The Times. “Suddenly, he blindfolded me and tied my hands. He also taped my mouth saying that he would give me some surprise gifts. But, instead, he cut off my fingers.”
“Doctors said my fingers could be re-attached within six hours but he refused to give them. After that time, another relative of my husband threw the fingers in a dustbin.
“We finally recovered them but it was too late,” said Ms Akther, who is still recovering at her parents’ house.
A family member of Mr Islam said that the couple had “differences” on some issues, including her decision to pursue higher studies.
Ms Akther – who is eager to continue her studies – said that she wanted her husband to be severely punished for the attack.
“I have now started practising writing with my left hand. I want to see how far I can go. I never imagined that my fingers would be chopped off like this because of my studies.”
Mohammed Saluddin, the Bangladesh police chief said that Mr Islam had confessed after he was arrested in the capital, Dhaka, and will face charges of permanent disfiguration.
“He was jealous because while he only had a grade eight standard education, she was off to collegne to pursue higher studies,” said Mohammed Saluddin, the Bangladesh police chief.
Islam has confessed to police after he was arrested in Dhaka, and will face charges of permanent disfiguration. Human rights groups are furious. They want life imprisonment for the man.
