Radio Biafra Begins Operation In U.S March 19 – IPOB

Radio Biafra will go live in the United States of America from Sunday, March 19, a leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Leonard Anemene, said in a statement issued on Friday.

Anemene said the project would have been out earlier but for some challenges.

“On the 12th of January 2017, the leadership of IPOB in unison with the leader, deputy leader and the Directorate of State (DOS), decided to expand the broadcasting services of the Biafran struggle through the creation of a new broadcasting service in the Americas.

“So, a live broadcast of Radio Biafra International (RBi) from the Americas has been imminent for a very long time now but was delayed due to logistic bottlenecks.

“However, we are proud to announce to you all today, that we are going live on air on Sunday, the 19th of March, 2017 with a maiden broadcast, starting from 10.00 am Biafra time.”

He, however, did not say the exact location where the station will be operating from.

In July, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) jammed Radio Biafra signals for reportedly “inciting war” through its programmes and “preaching hate messages” against Nigeria which it refers to as a ‘zoo’.

“Right now the signals from radio Biafra have been jammed successfully by the NBC.

“The commission is also working with security agencies to get those that are behind that radio because it is an illegal radio. It is not licensed by anybody to be on the airwave in Nigeria,” NBC had said in a statement.

But dismissing the claim, the station said the federal government cannot silence it.

“NBC lied to their master. Radio Biafra is live in BiafraLand. They cannot even ban our local station, do they even know we also transmit via satellite and online as well,” the group had also said in a statement.

Radio Biafra also known as Voice of Biafra, is a radio station originally founded by the then government of the Republic of Biafra which was revived by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu.

The radio is believed to have had its first transmission before the Nigeria civil war, the radio station was instrumental in the broadcast of speeches and propaganda by Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu to the people of the Republic of Biafra.

Radio Biafra is currently based in the United Kingdom and transmit via the internet and shortwave broadcast targeted majorly around Eastern Nigeria. Radio Biafra claims to be broadcasting the ideology of Biafra –”Freedom of the Biafra people”

Nnamdi Kanu, a director of the station, is currently in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

His family recently raised alarm over an alleged plot by prison wardens and the Department of State Services, DSS, to kill him in prison.

According to them, Kanu and his fellow IPOB detainees were prevented from receiving visitors because the prison wardens were plotting to hatch their plans without anyone knowing.

They, therefore, petitioned the United States of America and the European Union to intervene in the alleged maltreatment of their son by the prison authorities and security agents.
