Police Arrests Producers Of Fake Drinks, Wines in Aba


When it comes to producing fake products in Nigeria, Aba in Abia state comes first. The police has captured two men in Aba, suspected to be specialists in the production of fake alcoholic beverages, spirits and assorted wines. According to the state police command public relations officer, Mr Udeviotu Onyeke, the two suspects have been arraigned in court on charges of counterfeiting and adulteration of assorted brands of drinks. Onyeke, who gave the names of the two suspects as, Mr Emeka Nwankwo – aged 42 and 25-year old Chinonso Okoro,  said they were arrested on March 2, 2016 for adulterating assorted drinks in  Aba.

The officer said that the arrest was successful after some concerned neighbors who were bothered by the activities of the alleged fake manufactures reported called the attention of the police. No doubt this fake products must have had negative effects on its customers as well as made a bad representation of the genuine producers of the drinks. He also said that the products recovered from them include cartons of Bacco hot drink, Eagle Schnapps, Toma red grape wine, St Remy, Centenana Brandy, Cava PataNegra wine and Black label.

Others drinks from them were 501 hot drink, MacDowels, Royal Challenge whisky, Best Cream Whisky, Ria 969 and Malt Whisky. He said the police recovered from them  materials which are believed are being used in the production. They include a large plastic bowl containing liquid suspected to be alcohol, a plastic cup and funnel among other items. Onyeke said their offence were  contrary to sections 517 and 243 (2)  of the Criminal Code Cap 90 Vol. 3 Laws of Abia State of Nigeria 2005, which on conviction on the two counts will keep them in prison  for  three years as  conspiracy and adulteration carries a penalty of one year and two years jail term respectively.
