Popular Yoruba actress Mercy Aigbe Gentry who was reported to have been arrested yesterday by some armed policemen at the Olaiya Junction area of Osogbo, in Osun State, has reacted to the story making rounds by narrating her own account of the event on her Instagram page. Read below:
According to the story that was earlier reported, some heavily armed policemen attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday Mercy Aigbe-Gentry, at the Olaiya Junction area of Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
Even though it was not clear why she was arrested, a source said that the vehicle was allegedly arrested because its driver was making call while others claimed police cap was put on the dash board of the vehicle which attracted the policemen.
Eyewitnesses said that the actress who was travelling in gold-colour Honda end-of-discussion, was blocked at the popular Olaiya Junction by a police patrol van which had been trailing her car from Okefia area, while her car was thoroughly searched and sporadic gunshots were fired during the process.
Mercy Aigbe-Gentry was ordered to come down from the car but being a celebrity, a crowd was attracted who struggled to catch a glimpse of her when she was being quizzed by four policemen.
Annoyed by the audacity of the police to block her, the actress was said to have flared up and insulted the policemen who in anger, demanded and seized her vehicle papers and mobile phone. This was after the unruffled actress had reportedly put a call across to someone said to be her husband, who was also a police officer.
Mercy’s husband eventually spoke with one of the policemen and pleaded for her to be released before the vehicle papers and phone were returned to her.
The altercation between her and the policemen attracted a huge crowd of people, some of whom wanted to beat up the policemen. As a result, the security agents called for reinforcement to prevent the crowd from attacking them.
An eyewitness who identified himself as Adedeji reported that the police team which arrested her was in search of ‘yahoo boys’ and the look of a young man, who drove the actress drew their attention in addition to the police cap in the car. He said:
“When the policemen got to the junction, they went to the parked car and ordered the driver to roll down the window of the car because it was tinted and they could not identify those in the car.
“Immediately the driver rolled the glasses down, Mercy Aigbe rushed out of the car to confront the policemen. They eventually took her and the boy who drove away.”
Before the actress, Mercy Aigbe-Gentry could leave the scene, a team of about five policemen stormed the scene and fired several shots into the air, apparently to disperse the crowd. The actress’ driver was pushed into the back of the patrol van while she was allowed to remain in her car which was driven away by a policeman.
Reacting, ASP Egbedele, the assistant Police Public Relations Office, PPRO, Osun state Police command, explained that the matter was a minor traffic issue, adding that it has been settled.
