Sahara Reporters have not slowed down in their recent trend of making public the Phone numbers of high-ranking Nigerian Politicians! This time, they threw the media into a frenzy on Monday by publishing a list of mobile phone numbers of Nigerian Governors.
The news outfit on May 2nd, published the phone numbers of Nigerian Governors on Facebook and Twitter as part of its efforts to enhance governmental transparency and accountability in the country.
According to the media organisation, it is their hope that arming Nigerians with those contact numbers will foster greater interaction and communication between voters and their State chief executives. In the words of Sahara Reporters:
“Governors in Nigeria enjoy some of the highest salaries in the country while their constituents and civil servants often struggle to make ends meet. It was recently revealed, for example, that 26 States owe workers’ salaries, despite bailout funds received from the federal government just a few months ago.
“Nigeria governorship aspirants have often campaigned on promises to improve infrastructure, education, and livelihoods of their constituents, but rarely deliver on those promises once they are in office.
It will be remembered that Sahara Reporters published the direct lines of Nigeria’s lawmakers at the National Assembly in April. The published copies of the documents containing telephone numbers of the senators was released so that their constituents can effectively interact and socialize with their representatives at the Senate.
However, a Facebook user, Julius Kate, who tried one of the numbers reported to have gotten the response, “your call is been forwarded to another number”…..”the MTN number u calling is switched off”.
