The Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday, January 5, urged Nigerians to disregard rumours that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was plotting to Islamise Nigeria.

Osinbajo made the disclosure after receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Student Christian Movement of Nigeria (SCM) in his office, telling leaders of religious groups to dwell on facts.

It can be clearly recalled that prior to the 2015 election, Prof. Osinbajo stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was not secretly plotting to Islamise Nigeria if it won the election as was speculated.

He again reaffirmed that position stressing that the rumor making the rounds about plans to make Islam the official religion of Nigeria was baseless as the country “can’t be Islamised” given the 1999 Constitution that forbids state religion.

Expressing appreciation to SCM for the honor, the vice president solicited the organization’s assistance in circulating factual information about the Federal Government’s policies and programmes.

In addition, he called on religious bodies to channel their energies towards proffering solutions to the numerous challenges facing the country and also challenged Nigerian youths to wake up from slumber and take advantage of abundant opportunities in ICT, agriculture and other sectors.

Osinbajo noted that the available opportunities presently were far much more than they were in the past and therefore, stressed the need for young people to take responsibility for their future and be creative.

He also laid emphasis on the importance of using the internet to acquire knowledge as well as learning a second language to boost their global competitiveness.

Meanwhile, the vice president revealed last year that Buhari’s cook of 25 years and his driver are Christians, adding that while he was a Military Head of State, almost 70% of his cabinet were Christians and he never made attempts to Islamise them.
