The Nigerian music industry was in need of a distinct female voice when Tiwa Savage came on the scene. She had already cut her teeth in the music scene of the United Kingdom to which she relocated with her parents at the age of 11 and the United States where she gravitated to afterwards.
Tiwa Savage Background
Tiwa Savage’s educational pursuits culminated in a business administration degree from the University of Kent in the United Kingdom, which led to a short stint at The Royal Bank of Scotland. She however soon embraced her musical calling and went on to study professional music at the renowned Berklee College of music in Boston, United States.
She signed to Sony/ATV music in 2009 and began writing songs for some big names in the music industry, inclusive of Monica, Babyface, Kat Deluna and one collaboration with American artist, Fantasia on the song “Collard Greens and Cornbread” actually got nominated for a Grammy award.
Her vocals were also stretched in some background vocal features, one of which was as a backup artist for Whitney Houston’s “I look to you” music album and others for varied international artistes including; Mary J. Blige, George Michael, Ms. Dynamite, Chaka Khan, Kelly Clarkson, Emma Bunton and Blu Cantrell. Tiwa Savage, although much earlier on, featured as a contestant in the Music reality show, X-Factor, UK edition in 2006.
Contrary to popular belief, the Nigerian audience did not immediately fall in love with Tiwa when she finally decided to return home. In a conference she revealed her rocky start with a Nigerian audience who did not appreciate her accent and the types of songs that she initially brought to the table.
Tiwa Savage was however soon to become a widely loved brand, a Nigerian diva that would go on to command a very impressive following. Her hit single, Kelekele Love, which she released in 2010 was the launching pad from where she never stepped back.
Tiwa Savage Musicology
Tiwa Savage got signed to Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records in 2012 and her debut studio album, Once Upon a Time, was released on 3 July 2013. It was supported by singles; “KeleKele Love”, “Love Me (3x)”, “Without My Heart”, “Ife Wa Gbona”, “Folarin”, “OlorunMi” and “Eminado”.
Her second studio album, R.E.D, was released on 19 December 2015. It produced the singles “My Darlin'”, “African Waist” and “If I Start To Talk”.
Savage also featured on Solar Plexus, a compilation album released by Mavin Records. Her singing career has garnered her a number of awards which include one MTV Africa Music Award, two The Headies Awards, one Channel O Music Video Award, one Nigeria Music Video Award, and two City People Entertainment Awards, among others.
Reports have it that Tiwa Savage has finalized a management and publishing deal with Jay Z’s Roc Nation.
Tiwa Savage Personal Life
On the personal front, Tiwa Savage got engaged to her manager Tunji “Tee Bilz” Balogun on 5th February 2013, and they were wedded in a traditional ceremony on November 23rd, 2013 and had their white wedding in Dubai on April 26, 2014.
The two welcomed a baby boy on July 22, 2015. Following some publicly aired altercations between she and her husband this year, they are currently separated.
