Mercy Johnson is one of the most talented and sought after actresses in Nigeria. She made her debut into Nollywood in 2004, in the movie ‘The Maid,’ where she played ‘Jane.’ Thereafter, she did several other movies including the popular ‘Dumebi,’ which was named after her character.
Mercy Johnson was born on August 28, 1984, in Lagos, Nigeria. She is a native of Okene in Kogi State and is the fourth child of her parents; Mr. Daniel Johnson & Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson.
Her father is a former naval officer who was usually transferred from one state to the other. Nonetheless, he trained Mercy Johnson and her siblings with strict and stern hands, which helped in shaping the actress into a responsible and determined lady.
She was enrolled into a Primary School in Calabar, however, rounded up her primary education at Nigerian Navy Primary School, Lagos, following the transfer of her father. She later attended Rivers State Secondary School and Nigerian Navy Secondary School in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where she obtained her secondary education.
Mercy Johnson went into acting immediately after her Secondary education. Her outstanding performance in the audition for ‘The Maid,’ landed her the role that launched her career. As of June 2016, she has featured in over a hundred movies, most of which she played the lead role, and a few, the supporting lead role.
Some of her movies include, House Party (2004), Kill the Bride (2005), Sweet Mama (2006), Kolomental (2007), Corporate Maid (2008), Entanglement (2010), A Cry For Justice (2011), Heart of a Fighter (2012), Mercy the Bus Driver (2013), Hustlers (2014), Thy Will Be Done (2015), among many others.
Mercy Johnson has gained both national and international recognitions. She was listed as Google’s Most Searched Nollywood Celebrity in 2012 and 2013. Also, she was awarded Best Actress at Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards in 2013.
Mercy Johnson met her husband, Prince Odianosen Okojie in 2008 on a flight to France. They were both in business class and struck a conversation. They exchanged phone numbers and starting off as casual friends. On Saturday, August 27, 2011, the actress, said ‘I do’ to Prince Odianosen Okojie at Christ Embassy Church, Oregun, Lagos. Currently, they live on the Lagos Island and have three children together; two girls and a boy.
There is no recorded work of Mercy Johnson in 2009. Also between 2013 and 2015, she was less seen on set as she went on maternal leave to cater for her family. However, she maintained her public figure by attending events and sharing pictures of her family on major social network platforms, prior to her come back.
Amidst the peak of her career, Mercy Johnson received several bad-mouthing from fans and industry colleagues, who alleged her of using her curvaceous body to attract movie roles. In 2011, she was accused of ‘snatching’ another woman’s husband, as a lady called Lovely Okojie went public with the claim that she was legally married to Prince Odianosen Okojie.
This revelation almost placed Mercy’s marriage plans on hold. However, Prince cleared the air by saying, his relationship with the said lady ended a year before he met Mercy Johnson, and even though he has children by his ex-wife, he is no longer bound to her legally.
