A video has emerged on social media showing the embattled former Chairman of the Presidential Taskforce on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina, addressing the allegations of corruption levelled against him.
In the viral video, Maina who disclosed that he is still within the shores of Nigeria explained why he is on the run. He denied being a thief and also made fresh allegations adding that he has documents that would expose the real thieves.
He further called on Nigerians not to believe the rumours about him. Watch the video below…
The former pension boss was dismissed from office in 2013 during the Goodluck Jonathan administration after he was indicted in a N2.1 billion fraud. Maina evaded arrest and invitation by the EFCC and was afterward declared wanted by INTERPOL and the EFCC.
However, there was public outcry after it was recently revealed that Maina had been reinstated into the civil service as a director in the Ministry of Interior. Consequently, President Buhari ordered Maina’s dismissal from service and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his reinstatement and promotion.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has joined other Nigerians in criticizing Maina’s secret reinstatement into the civil service adding that it was not consistent with President Muhammadu Buhari’s avowed war on corruption, Thisday reports.
The former president spoke at the 2017 Foundation Day Public Lecture titled: “Corruption and the Challenges of the African Child” on Saturday, Oct. 28, in Ibadan.
Obasanjo also warned Buhari that there must not be any “sacred cows” in the fight against corruption.
“Corruption must be punished, and must be seen to be punished.
“Any accomplice in corruption and cover-up and any failure to punish must also earn punishment.
“We cannot afford to have sacred cows in the fight against corruption. The Maina saga should never have been allowed to occur. It is not in tandem with the fight against corruption,” Obasanjo said.
The Peoples Democratic Party caucus at the House of Representatives has also tackled President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration over Maina’s recall.
It said the development was an indication that the anti-corruption war of the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government had weakened.
According to the caucus, the Maina saga will gradually destroy the APC ahead of the 2019 general elections such that the PDP will become the ultimate beneficiary. The caucus released its position after it rounded off a meeting in Abuja.
The Deputy Minority Leader of the House, Mr. Chukwuka Onyema, who signed a statement on behalf of the caucus, noted that the Buhari government provided the PDP with opportunities to use against the majority party in 2019.
The group added that the focus of the party right now was to pick a national chairman, who would unite all PDP members to take on the APC in 2019. The statement read partly;
“The ‘Mainagate scandal’, where someone being sought by INTERPOL was not only smuggled into power but given double promotion and mind-boggling security protection in a country where many deserving civil servants are being passed over, is truly dumbfounding.
“The shocking re-emergence of the wanted former Chairman, Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina, who was sacked by the PDP government and declared a fugitive, says a lot about the dark undercurrents of the APC government.
“The involvement of part of the Presidency’s cabal in making funds and security details available to Maina, deserves being further investigated, while all those officials implicated should either resign or get sacked now.”
