A 200-level student of Lead City University, Ibadan has been sentenced to death by hanging for stabbing his fellow student to death. The ruling was given against the convict, Moshood Owolabi, by a High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State.
It was reported that Mr. Owolabi, a student of the department of Physical and Health Education, had caused the untimely death of Mr. Seun Kolawole by stabbing him with a broken bottle.
Presenting his case earlier, the prosecuting counsel, A. Olawale, told the court that the convict stabbed his victim with a broken bottle in the neck after a misunderstanding between both of them. He maintained that the stabbing incident, which took place on January 12, 2014 at toll-gate area of Ibadan, led to the death of Mr. Kolawole.
Following Section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap. 38 Vol. II Law of Oyo State 2000, Justice Adegboye Gbolagunte in his judgment yesterday, Wednesday 8, sentenced the Lead City University to death by hanging having found him guilty of the murder charge brought before his court.
The Justice held that the prosecuting counsel had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt, with undeniable evidence which showed that the accused carried out the offence as charged.
The presiding judge advised parents to always watch their children in order to stop them from misbehaving. He therefore, ruled that the accused be sentenced to death by hanging to serve as a deterrent to others.
It’s really scary what people can do in the heat of anger!
A similar incident also happened in the University of Osun involving a 400-level student of the Department of Physics Electronics, Adekunle Yusuf, aka Stone, who stabbed another student of the institution, Kazeem Ige, to death in the Oke Baale area of Osogbo.
The deceased, a 24-year-old student of Civil Engineering Department, and his assailant, who is on the run, were friends they fell apart a week before the ugly incident.
Some students disclosed that the young men engaged each other on the street on Monday immediately they met and Stone brought out a dagger and stabbed Ige.
The deceased was first taken to a clinic at Oke Baale, but he was reportedly rejected by the medical personnel and was taken to Our Lady of St. Fatima Hospital in the Jaleyemi area of Osogbo, where he was confirmed dead on arrival.
A student of the school, Seyi Bamigbayan, who reported the case at the OJa Oba Police Station said that the two students were friends before they parted ways.
“The two students were friends, but I think they had an issue last week and one of them was said to have hit the other with a hammer. But I heard that they started fighting again when they saw each other yesterday ( Monday) and Stone brought out a knife and stabbed Ige in the armpit.
“Ige fell and there was blood everywhere. We rushed him to a clinic at Oke Balale before we took him to Jaleyemi Hospital, where they told us he was dead.”
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Folashade Odoro, confirmed the killing. She said the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Fimihan Adeoye, had directed that security should be beefed up in the area to prevent any form of reprisal. “The CP has ordered a thorough investigation into the case and said that the suspect must be apprehended,” she added.
