Governor Udom Emmanuel – “Akpabio Did Okay, But I’ve Done Better”

Governor Udom Emmanuel, the current Governor of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria who has been in office since 29 May 2015 ran successfully for the office of Governor in the April 2015 elections on the platform of People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The Governor recently declined the description of his administration as being a continuation of the immediate past administration of Mr. Akpabio.

Mr. Emmanuel clearly stated to the people of Akwa-Ibom on Sunday in a radio broadcast which was organised to mark his six months in office as the governor of Akwa Ibom State, that his administration is an advancement of the preceding governor and not an add-on of the former Akwa Ibom governor Godswill Akpabio. He further stated during the broadcast, that the former Governor, Mr. Akpabio played the role of Moses by rescuing Akwa Ibom people from the hands of the Egyptians and brought them to River Jordan. So his own administration is taking the people across the Jordan River into the Promised Land. In his words:

“Those who oppose my administration have claimed that we are an appendage of the last administration.

“That is not true. We are an improvement on the last administration,” the governor said.

“To be fair to the last administration, it initiated programs which increased our self-esteem as a people and earned us respect.

“We have leveraged on this and we have taken our people to new heights of superior performance,” he said.

Mr. Emmanuel insisted that no government was perfect, but stated it was a heartbreaking commentary on Akwa Ibom politics that people who were a part of the Akpabio administration for seven of its eight years would now turn around to demonize it.

According to him “They claim that the administration was wasteful, irresponsible, corrupt etc. and this sounds like cutting your nose in order to spite your face,”

The governor expressed his opinion on the cancellation of the April governorship election in 18 out of the 31 local government areas in the state by the election tribunal, and stated that he wasn’t scared of a re-run.

In his radio broadcast which lasted for about 16 minutes, the Governor mentioned the word “mandate” nine times, stating that “those who sought to truncate God’s mandate have grown weaker”, apparently referring to the opposition All Progressives Congress in the state.

He called himself “the custodian of the hopes, aspirations and dreams of this generation of Akwa Ibomites” and revealed that he was strongly  in-charge of the state. He also disclosed the secret behind his victory, saying that the opposition was interested in making their own dream come alive and not the dreams of Akwa Ibom people.

Governor Emmanuel detailed the achievements of his administration in the past six months which includes the reactivation of Peacock Paint Industry in Etinan, the rehabilitation of roads across the state and the payment of 10 years arrears of pensions and gratuities to primary school teachers and local government employees in the state.

He further urged the state to stay united in order to make Akwa-Ibom children grow in a state where togetherness of spirit binds them in a  symphony of love and oneness of spirit. Quoting Mr. Emmanuel

“As we move forward, let mischief, hatred and divisive tendencies be replaced by unity, love, and good neighborliness,”

“We owe this to our children, not to build a society where mutual suspicion are worn like badges of honor, but to build a state where oneness of spirit binds us in a symphony of love and oneness of spirit.”
