Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination, GLAAD, have called out Disney for not including LGBT characters in any of the studio’s movies over the past year.
On Tuesday, gay Disney fans took to Twitter and Facebook advocating for a gay character in the second part of the record-breaking and critically acclaimed 2013 animated film FROZEN, with the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend.
Frozen 2 is expected to hit theaters before 2018, though no release date has been confirmed yet. Frozen is the highest-grossing animated movie of all time. Since its release in 2013, it has been heralded for its progressive nature.
The movie abandoned the old romantic prince-saves-princess plot line for a story that revolves around the love had between two sisters. Now, fans are demanding that Disney take it a step further and break down more gender norms.
It was widely construed as the studio’s first foray into feminism because it portrayed a traditional happy-ever-after with a prince in favour of sisterly devotion.
These fans believe a first step in the right direction would be to declare Elsa gay, setting her up as a role model for LGBT children. The fairy tale musical is currently in production, and since it is animated, it could be very difficult for Disney to set their sequel on this course if they are not already planning to give Elsa a girlfriend.
The original movie’s Academy Award-winning theme song ‘Let it Go’ has been adopted by the LGBT community as an anthem.
Disney released 12 major motion pictures in 2015, including new installments of Star Wars and Marvel, none of which included any gay characters of any kind, whether they be minor or major roles.
Paramount also came under fire for not having any LGBT characters in their release slate from the past year. GLAAD had their eye more firmly planted on Disney, though. Here’s what they said in their initial release;
“Of all the studios tracked in this report, Walt Disney Studios has the weakest historical record when it comes to LGBT-inclusive films. For the first time since beginning this report, GLAAD did not find any LGBT-inclusive content among Disney’s yearly slate of films.”
