Chikwendu Kalu, the Abia State House of Assembly Speaker, was reported to have given an order to two policemen in his convoy to shoot two Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, officers on patrol for stopping his wife’s car.
According to live witnesses of the incident, the speaker dished out the order when the FRSC officers stopped the Sport Utility Vehicle his wife was travelling in, along the Umuikaa/Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway, for not fastening their seat belts.
“When the vehicle was stopped (by the FRSC officials), the driver refused to stop, only for him to stop at a distance.
“The driver reversed the vehicle and it was discovered that a woman in the passenger seat in front, is an officer of the Department of State Services attached to the Speaker’s wife.
“The DSS officer ran towards the officer who stopped the vehicle, held him by uniform and dragged him to the ground, accusing him of hitting their vehicle,” Punch quoted a reliable source as saying.
The source added that the speaker’s wife allegedly joined the policemen to beat the official.
“One of them called the speaker whose village is nearby. He then came with some policemen.
“He ordered them to shoot the armless officers who were sitting inside the patrol vehicle and mercilessly beat up the team leader.
The policemen also allegedly vandalised the FRSC patrol vehicles and left the two men in the pool of their own blood.
“The policemen also forcefully opened the patrol vehicle and went away with the battery. They left the team leader and the other officials that were shot on the road. Other road users helped them to the hospital,” said the source.
Confirming the incident, the FRSC Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, said the case had been “reported to the commissioner of police in the state for further investigations and that it won’t deter the FRSC from saving lives on the highways”.
He also confirmed on Sunday, July 17, that the FRSC officials were in stable condition, adding that the Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, was in touch with the hospital treating them.
He stated that the police authorities had also assured the corps that the errant cops would face the law, adding that they had been detained and would face Orderly Room trial subsequently.
“The state Commissioner of Police has assured the Corps that investigation has been launched into the incident and the two policemen have been detained. We have confidence in the police to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure that justice is done,” Kazeem said.
However, the Chief Press Secretary to the speaker, Mr. Okey Chikwendu, denied knowledge of the development at the moment.
Meanwhile, the two brutalised FRSC officers have been scheduled for surgery on Monday (today) to extract bullets from their bodies.
It was learnt that the FRSC authorities had been informed about the surgery.
